Real Sociedad vs Cadiz Preview
Thursday’s action in LaLiga gets underway in Donostia where European hopefuls Real Sociedad are up against struggling Cadiz. The visitors have been a resurgent force under Sergio’s leadership though and will carry belief into this one.
For Real Sociedad, their primary goal now will be holding onto a Europa League position for which they need to finish no lower than 6th. They have a 3 point advantage on 7th placed Villarreal coming into this one but significantly the sides meet this coming weekend in what could be almost a straight shootout for Europa League football. Given Villarreal currently hold the H2H advantage having won 3-1 at the Reale Arena earlier this term, La Real could significantly ease the pressure on that game by bettering Villarreal’s result on Thursday night.
Imanol’s side are not in good form though with a four game winless streak seeing their Champions League hopes evaporate. A 2-1 defeat at lowly Levante on Friday night was particularly damaging. The fact that they have scored 10 fewer goals this season than a Levante side that is seemingly heading for the Segunda Division, certainly helps to explain why they haven’t built on their strong early foundations this term.
Even Cadiz, who aren’t a side blessed with many obvious attacking talents and have often adopted a cautious approach to games, are only one goal shy of Real Sociedad’s return. That was helped by a 3-0 win over Elche at the weekend. Cadiz were dominant in the game but had to wait until the 80th minute to grab their first goal before cruising to victory.
You can only admire the job Sergio has done since taking charge and the players deserve a huge amount of credit too for consistently competing well against on paper superior sides. Cadiz haven’t lost by more than a single goal since the change in coach back in January and they’ve given themselves a fantastic chance of beating the drop now, having looked in serious peril for much of the winter.
