Real Betis vs Sevilla Preview
LaLiga heads off into the international break in style with one of the biggest fixtures on the Spanish football calendar. LaLiga’s most passionate city derby sees two high-flying teams clash as Real Betis host Sevilla at the Benito Villamarin.
Rewind a week or so and Real Betis fans would have been relishing this fixture and really fancying their chances of getting one over on their old foes. They’d just put in one of their most convincing performances of the season to hammer Valencia 4-1 to record a third straight league win and there was seemingly nothing that could stop Manuel Pellegrini’s side in their stride.
However things have taken a significant turn for the worse since then with Betis on the wrong end of 3-0 and 4-0 defeats over the past week at the hands of Atletico Madrid in LaLiga and Bayer Leverkusen in the Europa League. Betis had only suffered 4 defeats inside 90 minutes in all of 2021 prior to that and only one of those losses was by more than a single goal. It’s hard to find a rational explanation for such heavy defeats all of a sudden, other than to say they were up against two strong sides on top of their game.
Sevilla though may take a different perspective and would have surely seen defensive flaws in those Betis performances that they might be able to exploit. However it hasn’t been a good week in their half of the city either with Sevilla suffering a damaging 2-1 home defeat against Lille in the Champions League on Tuesday, a result which leaves them bottom of a group they were favourites to win.
They will need to improve in that competition if they are to even transfer into the Europa League, the final of which will be at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan next May. Domestically speaking, there hasn’t been much wrong with Sevilla though and they make the short trip across town having won 3 of their last 4 in LaLiga with an impressive return of 24 points from 11 games so far this season.
