Barcelona vs Getafe Preview
The final game of the midweek action sees Barcelona play host to Getafe. By the time this kicks off, Barca will have played two fewer games than the two Madrid clubs and could be as much as 8 points off the top. That sounds a lot at this stage, but with Atletico Madrid still to visit Camp Nou, this title race is still completely in Barcelona’s hands and they will be the champions if they win all their games.
It has been quite a busy few days for everyone connected with the club. After a dominant performance in the Copa del Rey Final secured their first silverware in a couple of years, all the talk was of a new generation of players making the first step on a journey to making Barca a competitive force in European football again.
Within 24 hours, Barcelona had signed up to a European Super League and have since had to watch on as 9 clubs have withdrawn, leaving the Catalan giants in the unfamiliar position of being in bed with Florentino Perez, something which hasn’t gone down well with some Barcelona followers. Others would have welcomed a Super League and from a financial point of view the club certainly needed the immediate cash injection it would have brought.
Ronald Koeman would’ve had a tough job focusing the minds of his players on this game against a Getafe side that did them a favour at the weekend by holding Real Madrid to a draw. Getafe probably should have won that game with Jose Bordalas’ team producing one of their better showings in a disappointing season.
They couldn’t find a breakthrough though and are LaLiga’s joint lowest scorers heading into this round of fixtures with just 22 goals in 31 matches so far. They have a four point cushion on the bottom three with four draws from their last five games ensuring they’ve just about stayed above the thick of the relegation scrap but that could change quickly if other results go against them this week.
