Mallorca vs Sevilla Preview

Sevilla travel to the Balearic Islands this weekend in need of a win to help kick start their season. The Andalusian side are in the relegation zone currently but there were some positives in midweek as they look to make a fresh start under Jorge Sampaoli.

Mallorca are 3 points better off at this stage but haven’t really found any sort of consistency yet in terms of results. They have already played both Real Madrid and Barcelona though and if you exclude those games, it’s just 1 defeat from 6 matches and they perhaps should have got something from that match, a 2-1 loss to Betis.

They come into this one following a draw at Elche on Monday night. Having fallen behind early on, they’d have been relatively content to leave with a point but the result came at a cost. Goalscorer Vedat Muriqi received a late red card which will rule him out of the next two games. Given the Kosovo international has scored 4 of Mallorca’s 7 league goals so far this term, that’s clearly a massive blow and his physical presence ensures he is far more than just a goal threat for this team.

Muriqi’s absence will be a boost to a Sevilla defence that has struggled badly this term. They could easily have lost again last weekend against Athletic in what was Sampaoli’s first game back in charge. However we did see a more assured Sevilla display in midweek as they drew 1-1 away to Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League with a new 3-4-3 system showing some promising early signs.

The new coach will need some time to figure out his best options as it’s very hard to say what Sevilla’s best XI or system is right now. Few if any players have truly convinced this season and Sampaoli has already made some big calls, most notably dropping goalkeeper Bono last weekend, although the Moroccan did return for the Champions League game.

Score Prediction: Mallorca 0-1 Sevilla

Mallorca may struggle to offer much of an attacking threat without Vedat Muriqi and this feels like a good opportunity for Sevilla to put three points on the board. They may just benefit from being away from the Sanchez-Pizjuan too given how toxic the atmosphere has become at times and following an improved performance in Dortmund, they could get the three points here.
