Sevilla’s bid to reach the knockout stage of the Champions League takes them to Germany this week with Wolfsburg the opposition in their second group stage clash. The side that finished 4th in Bundesliga last term, has started brightly again and will provide a test for Julen Lopetegui’s side.

Sevilla’s UCL campaign didn’t get off to the best of starts. They conceded three penalties in the opening half of their home game against RB Salzburg but the Austrians failed to make the most of those opportunities or a man advantage in the Second Half and Sevilla still came away with a 1-1 draw. That was something of a let-off for Julen Lopetegui and his team in a group they are probably favourites to win.

They have been better since the Salzburg game. 7 points from their subsequent 3 league games is a good return and they’ve only let in one goal during that period. However their tendency to look much more vulnerable against European as opposed to Spanish opponents is a growing worry, and they could do with making some kind of statement here with a stronger defensive display on the road.

Wolfsburg haven’t been in the Champions League since 2015/16 when they got all the way to the Quarter Finals before losing to Real Madrid. They actually won the home leg of that tie 2-0 and have not faced Spanish opposition since. They couldn’t even make it past the Europa League play-off round last season but they recovered from that disappointment to put together their best league campaign in recent years.

They have had a summer change in coach with former Dutch international Mark van Bommel taking charge. It was a great start for the new boss with 4 straight wins in the Bundesliga to open the campaign but they’ve been less convincing in recent weeks. They were distinctly second best but came away with a 0-0 draw from their opening Champions League game away to Lille and haven’t won either league fixture since, losing 3-1 away to Hoffenheim at the weekend.

Wolfsburg vs Sevilla Predictions

Score Prediction: Wolfsburg 1-2 Sevilla

Sevilla are experienced European campaigners and this side is still mostly the same as the one that won the Europa League in 2020. They know how to handle these European nights and that extra experience and perhaps a touch of extra quality could be decisive here and they look capable of putting an important three points on the board.
