With relaxed rules coming into place allowing clubs to fill their stadiums to 60% of their capacities, this weekend saw the largest crowd in LaLiga in 18 months as Atletico Madrid entertained Athletic Club in front of nearly 40,000 at the Wanda Metropolitano.
On the pitch, there were more remarkable numbers involving Cadiz. They completed just 45% of their passes and had only 22.2% possession against Celta Vigo. They won the game 2-1 to inflict further woe on Celta who have made a really poor start to the season. Barcelona by contrast were the team with the highest passing accuracy despite criticism from some fans for their direct style at the end of their game against Granada.
One of the best attacking performances of the weekend came from Real Betis. They showed little sign of a European hangover as they managed to have the most shots and create the most xG of any team in LaLiga this weekend. It wasn’t enough for maximum points though as Leandro Cabrera scored a 96th minute leveller to rescue a point for Espanyol.

For the second week running we saw Cadiz complete less passes than a single opposition player as Celta’s Jeison Murillo completed 110 – the most by a player in any LaLiga game so far this season. We also saw a season high set in terms of key balls with Nabil Fekir on fire for Real Betis, completing 8 key passes against Espanyol.
We also had a joint season high set in terms of aerials won. Joselu won 13 aerial challenges in Alaves’ defeat against Osasuna equalling the mark he set on matchday 3 against Valencia. Alaves were quick to get the ball wide and get crosses into the box in that game and Osasuna’s full-backs were busy men with Nacho Vidal and Manu Sanchez both completing 7 tackles, the most by any player this weekend in LaLiga.
In terms of shots, surprisingly no player had more than Barcelona centre-back Ronald Araujo. He was used an emergency striker at the end and to good effect as the Uruguayan popped up with a late equaliser against Granada.
Sorare LaLiga Fantasy Team of the Week
It was a weekend where a number of centre-backs put in impressive displays. Mario Hermoso shone for Atletico Madrid while Ronald Araujo also features largely because of his involvement in the opposing half rather than his own. Two less-heralded defenders also stood out with both David García of Osasuna and Rayo’s Alejandro Catena also posting 90+ scores.
There wasn’t much to shout about in midfield with Pathé Ciss the only man to score over 75. Up front though there was a bit more action with Real Madrid’s late show at Mestalla seeing Vini Junior and Karim Benzema into the team of the week for the second matchday in a row.
Sorare Player of the Week: Nabil Fekir (95)
The LaLiga matchday 5 player of the week was Nabil Fekir. He completed an outstanding eight key passes in an impressive performance for Real Betis, also getting on the scoresheet in their 2-2 draw against Espanyol.
