Valencia vs Alaves Preview

Valencia have been a bit of a mixed bag so far under Albert Celades with some impressive wins but also some damaging losses, with the latest coming in midweek. They will be hopeful of bouncing back here against an Alaves side which doesn’t come into this one in great form with three defeats from their last four league outings.

Los Che never really managed to turn the Mestalla into a fortress last season with a few too many draws, even in the second half of the season when they did come on much stronger. That’s one area where Celades may feel he can improve on the reign of Marcelino. However a 3-0 defeat against Ajax in the Champions League in midweek highlighted the frailties that do exist in this Valencia outfit.

Alaves don’t have anywhere the kind of midfield quality required to cause as many problems as the Dutch side managed. They were blown away by Real Sociedad in their last away game but did respond well with a home win against Mallorca last time out. They actually doubled their goal tally for the season in that match with Lucas Perez becoming the first player other than Joselu to net for the Basques this term.

On the surface, it’s not a bad strike pairing that they’ve assembled but Perez has really faded since that prolific 2015/16 season with hometown club Depor. Whether they will get much service in this match is doubtful with Alaves not blessed with an array of creative options. They should at least be the fresher side with Valencia having been in European action in the week and Celades is likely to shuffle his pack a bit, particularly given the manner of that loss.

Valencia vs Alaves Predictions

Score Prediction: 2-0 Valencia

Valencia ought to bounce back with a win here. Alaves have shown very little away from home so far this season, with just 1 goal and 1 point to show for their efforts on the road. Valencia were impressive in spells away to Athletic Club last weekend and if they can find that kind of level again, they should having the beating of this Alaves side.
