Sunday’s action in La Liga kicks off in the Basque Country as Eibar finally play their first home game of the season. There have been renovations over the summer to improve the facilities at the Spanish top flight’s smallest venue but Eibar will hope it will continue to be a stadium that opposition sides do not relish coming to. Espanyol are their first visitors with both sides in need of a few points following disappointing starts.
Espanyol have played a lot of football already this term and they’ve done pretty well in the Europa League to reach the group stage. However the early signs are not good in La Liga. They are yet to win and were hammered 3-0 at home by newly promoted Granada last time out. Having lost some key men over the summer, David Gallego looks to have a tough job on his hands to rebuild this side into one capable of competing at home and abroad.
Eibar don’t have any European distractions but they are one of those sides who are perhaps darkhorses to get in the mix for Europa League qualification this term. They will need to improve on their early performances though. They’ve taken just a single point from their 3 games to date and that’s not great when you consider they’ve already face two of the promoted teams.
They are much stronger on home soil though and they’ll fancy they can chalk up their first win of the new season here. Jose Mendilibar should have a fully fit squad to choose from but he still seems to be in two minds when it comes to his strongest eleven and even the formation that will get the best out of the players at his disposal. The same could be said of Gallego’s Espanyol though with both sides certainly something of a work in progress.

Espanyol haven’t been at the races at times this season and you have to worry for them here against a side they have tended to struggle against. Eibar dominated this fixture last season and they have enough quality in wide areas to get lots of good service into the box and cause problems for a shaky looking Espanyol defence. It should be a positive start at a new-look Ipurua for Eibar.
