Mallorca vs Elche Preview

Two sides that were expected to be in the relegation picture this season clash on Sunday. Both newly promoted Mallorca and Elche made reasonably strong starts but have seen results decline more recently. Victory here would be a significant boost for either team heading into the international break.
Mallorca are without a win in four league games heading into this, although they have drawn each of the last three. Stoppage Time drama has been a theme of all of those three games with Mallorca conceding last gasp equalisers in their last two away games at Valencia and Cadiz. Meanwhile their most recent home game saw Mallorca fall down to 10 men against a Sevilla side that had what would have been a Stoppage Time winner ruled out by VAR.
Even the last match involving Mallorca that didn’t finish level saw them allow Real Sociedad to score a 90th minute winner so this is not a game you will want to turn off until the final whistle has been blown. Those late goals will be a source of real frustration for Luis Garcia who will know that every point is going to be precious as they attempt to stay at this level.
This in theory offers Mallorca a good chance to put three points on the board against an Elche side that has struggled in recent weeks. They’ve taken just 1 point from their last 4 league games, not a great return given they’ve had some winnable fixtures during that period, although their most recent fixture was against Real Madrid and ended in a 2-1 defeat.
Elche are starting to feel very much like a typical Fran Escriba side. They play a lot of safe balls and completed 88% of their passes against Los Blancos, one of the highest pass completion rates on matchday 12. However too often their build-up play lacks real pace or purpose and they aren’t creating a lot of chances with just 9 goals scored from 12 games so far a worrying return.

Possible Lineups
Mallorca vs Elche Predictions
Score Prediction: Mallorca 1-0 Elche
This will be a close game between two teams that have some capable footballers but are a bit short on cutting edge. Home advantage and the poor form that Elche are in, suggests that Mallorca may be the team more likely to edge it providing they manage to keep their nerve in those jittery final stages.
