Sevilla vs Copenhagen Preview

Sevilla’s slim hopes of Champions League progress depend on their ability to beat Copenhagen in their fifth group game this week. Realistically, it’s more likely that the outcome of this one will settle who comes 3rd in Group G and advances into the Europa League in the new year.

Victory for Sevilla would guarantee themselves at least a place in the Europa League, a competition they have won more times than anyone else. Their record of just 2 points from 4 games so far in this group suggests that might just be their level this season as they were found wanting in their two previous home games, losing 4-0 to Manchester City and 4-1 to Borussia Dortmund.

Julen Lopetegui was still in charge for both of those matches though and there have been tentative signs of progress since the appointment of Jorge Sampaoli. They were unbeaten under the guidance of the Argentine heading into their clash with Real Madrid on Saturday and for long periods it looked as though that record would be extended. However late goals from Lucas Vazquez and Fede Valverde secured a 3-1 win for Los Blancos.

Sevilla and Copenhagen are currently only separated by goal difference in this group after their meeting in the Danish capital ended goalless. The visitors also know that a victory here would guarantee 3rd place and a crack at the Europa League. They are yet to score a goal in the group though so Sevilla’s defence will fancy their chances of keeping things tight here.

Despite that, the Danish champions did hold leaders Manchester City to a 0-0 draw on matchday 4. It was an impressive response from Jacob Neestrup’s team, just a week after they had shipped five goals in defeat at the Etihad. They also need a win to stay alive in the Champions League, but it’s hard to see Copenhagen being too adventurous here and they’d most likely settle for a point which would keep them in the race for 3rd.

Possible Lineups (via Sofascore)

Score Prediction: Sevilla 2-0 Copenhagen

Sevilla have not performed well at home this season but this is a much more favourable fixture than some of their recent ones. Sampaoli has sparked a bit of life into this team and while there are still some evident flaws, they ought to have enough to put three points on the board for the first time this season in Europe.
