Girona vs Cadiz Preview
Girona and Cadiz face off in a game between two sides who were among the pre-season relegation favourites. Girona have been the more impressive side but are seeking to end a run of 3 straight defeats here.
This is clearly still a learning curve for Girona and many of their young players. They’ve shown ambition and looked to play positive football which is nice to see but they have ultimately come unstuck in their last three games, all of which were against strong opponents in the form of Betis, Real Sociedad and Atletico Madrid.
Girona managed to score at least once in each of those games and netted 3 against La Real but a points return of 0 highlights some of the defensive flaws they currently have. Michel has gone with a back three but it’s perhaps the one area of the team where they could do with some fresh options in January as most sides will fancy their chances of creating opportunities against the Catalans.
Cadiz meanwhile have managed to tighten up a bit at the back and grind out a few results. They are unbeaten in 3 heading into this, having lost their opening 5 games to nil. Sergio deserves credit for having ridden out the storm to some extent and got a team that looked devoid of confidence to raise their level once more.
This is a really big game for Cadiz as Girona are one of the teams they really need to at least stay in touch with. January will bring the chance to draft in some fresh recruits and the Andalusians could do with a bit more quality in midfield and up front with just 3 goals scored so far this term, two of which came in the draw with Espanyol last weekend. If they can reach the World Cup break, within a point or two of safety, that would be a reasonably good outcome in the circumstances given the dire way they started the campaign.
