FC Copenhagen vs Sevilla Preview

Sevilla travel to Denmark this week fresh from a much needed victory in LaLiga, their first of the season. That eases the pressure slightly on Julen Lopetegui and his team although though this match is every bit as important and anything less than three points would damage their prospects of progressing into the knockout stage of the Champions League.
The strong perception in this group is that Manchester City will qualify and Copenhagen will not, which will most likely leave Borussia Dortmund and Sevilla battling it out for 2nd place. It may come down to the double header between the sides next month but Sevilla can put themselves in a much better position heading into that if they can claim all the points here.
All is not well at this football club and the knives were out for coach and president heading into Saturday’s trip to Espanyol. An early goal was just what a team low on confidence needed after a bruising week and it was just what they got. Erik Lamela’s goal in the 1st minute set up an excellent 1st Half display as a brace from full-back Jose Angel Carmona ensured Sevilla took a 3-0 advantage and while they did falter after that, they held on for a 3-2 win.
Denmark awaits them and the result of this match combined with their trip to Villarreal this coming weekend may determine whether or not Julen Lopetegui makes it to the other side of the international break. They are up against a Copenhagen side that impressively beat Turkish champions Trabzonspor in the Play-Off Round before suffering a 3-0 defeat at Borussia Dortmund in their opening group game.
They will sense weakness in Sevilla though and may have their eyes on trying to snatch 3rd place in this group away from the Spanish side. Their record in Champions League group stage action is better than you might imagine. They made it out of their group in 2010/11, securing a draw against Pep Guardiola’s Barcelona along the way, and only lost one game in their only group stage appearance since then in 2016/17, narrowly missing out on a top two finish. They have struggled so far this season though domestically, losing 5 of their opening 9 Danish Superliga matches.
Possible Lineups (via Sofascore)
Score Prediction: Copenhagen 2-2 Sevilla
Both sides have significant defensive issues right now so expect errors at the back and goals in this match. Sevilla will have been boosted by winning at the weekend but they remain a flawed team and may struggle to get the three points that they really need here.
