The final club to play in LaLiga 2022/23 will be decided on Sunday evening on the island of Tenerife and the stakes could not be higher for the two clubs involved. Tenerife are hoping to end a 12 year wait for top flight football while Girona are hoping it’s a case of third time lucky after Play-Off Final heartbreak in the last two seasons.

The 1st Leg offered few clues as to which side is going to ultimately clinch promotion. Girona had the better of the game, registering 16 attempts to Tenerife’s 3 whilst enjoying a 70% share of the ball. However there were no goals which leaves this tie very finely poised going into the 2nd Leg.

Tenerife were a little bit disappointing in that 1st Leg, following on from an excellent victory over Canary Islands rivals Las Palmas in the Semi-Final. They won both legs of that tie with Enric Gallego bagging a brace in the return clash in Gran Canaria to spark wild celebrations back in Santa Cruz. The crowd inside the Estadio Heliodoro Rodríguez López will have a big part to play here with Tenerife fans desperate to end the long wait for a crack at the top flight.

They will be the slight favourites to win the game with home advantage, however their failure to score an away goal does create an awkward dilemma for boss Luis Miguel Ramis. A score draw would be enough for Girona and the visitors would very much be in the box-seat were they to grab the opening goal on Sunday.

More of the same may be the message from Michel. His side carried the momentum over from their surprise win at Eibar in the Semi-Final to deliver a strong 1st Leg showing, although he’d have been disappointed by his side’s failure to find a breakthrough. He can though take confidence from having witnessed his team do the damage in the away 2nd Leg in the last round and it’s probably no bad thing for them to be away here given the scars they must carry from Play-off Final 2nd Leg defeats at Montilivi in the last two years against Elche and Rayo Vallecano.

It’ll be interesting to see what the Girona team selection is. Michel caught everyone by surprise by leaving out star striker and top scorer Cristhian Stuani in the 2nd Leg against Eibar, although that didn’t stop the Uruguayan coming on to net a decisive Extra Time goal. He may consider doing something similar here with the prospect of Extra Time very possible after a tight 1st Leg.

Head to Head

  • Last 6 Competitive Meetings: 4 Tenerife Wins, 1 Girona Win, 1 Draw.
  • The 1st Leg ended 0-0 last weekend in Catalunya.
  • Tenerife won both meetings during the regular season.
  • They’ve won their last 3 home games against Girona with the Catalans last getting a result here with a 3-3 draw in 2017.

Tenerife vs Girona Predictions

Score Prediction: Tenerife 1-1 Girona (Agg: 1-1 | Girona to be promoted on away goals)

Only one point separated the sides in the regular season and this really does feel too close to call after a scoreless 1st Leg. It’s likely to be cagey but it feels as though Girona have one or two individuals who could just provide a moment of quality to net what may well be a decisive away goal and put the ghosts of the last two years to bed.
