Barcelona vs Cadiz Preview

Barcelona attendance

Barcelona and Cadiz are in action on Monday in LaLiga with Camp Nou still reeling to some extent from a surprise European exit against Eintracht Frankfurt last week. It should at least feel more like a home game here, after what was something of a German takeover in the stands last Thursday.

It was the first major setback of 2022 for Barcelona and a first defeat inside 90 minutes since they exited the Champions League, also against German opposition, in December. A reality check perhaps for Xavi and his team but it’s worth taking a step back and remembering the situation they were in when he took over. Champions League qualification was the short-term mission statement and it was by no means looking certain in the autumn, but Barça have clearly improved under his guidance and should meet that goal with minimal fuss now.

They will want a strong response here and three points to further cement their top four status. Xavi is hoping to be boosted by the return of Gerard Pique in defence with his presence certainly missed in the Europa League exit last week. Strengthening the defence is likely to be a priority this summer with Pique and Jordi Alba both well into their 30’s now while the younger players have struggled for consistency.

Cadiz have a tough run-in so they can’t afford to really write any games off and must try to find a shock win or two along the way as they target survival. Sergio has given them a real boost since he came in and made them more organised. However you do wonder just how costly their inability to see out a 1-0 lead with 12 minutes to go last time out against Betis might prove, with the Seville club fighting back to win 2-1 at the Nuevo Mirandilla.

They will be huge underdogs here and aren’t helped by a suspension to Ruben Alcaraz who has made an impact in midfield since joining up with his former boss from Real Valladolid. However Cadiz shouldn’t be totally written off and it’s worth noting that they haven’t lost any of their 13 matches under Sergio by more than a single goal.

Barcelona vs Cadiz Predictions

Score Prediction: Barcelona 2-1 Cadiz

Xavi will want a response following a poor Europa League exit but that would have knocked the confidence levels of a Barcelona side that had been flying. They shouldn’t expect to merely roll Cadiz over here either. Sergio has got this team playing for him but they may fall just short in their attempts to get a result.
