Atletico Madrid vs Manchester City Preview

Atletico Madrid and Manchester City face off for a place in the last four of the UEFA Champions League this Wednesday at the Wanda Metropolitano. City dominated the 1st Leg against a defensive Atleti side but could only find one goal to leave the tie in the balance still heading into this week’s 2nd Leg.

Diego Simeone’s men would have left Manchester with mixed emotions but overall they’ll be happy to be going into the 2nd Leg still very much in the tie. They didn’t have a single shot in the 1st Leg but will have to show a bit more in the final third, although they will still need to balance risk and reward against a talented City side.

They will be hoping a noisy Wanda Metropolitano can help tilt the tie in their favour. They haven’t lost any of their 14 Champions League knockout matches played in their own stadium under Diego Simeone’s leadership. That’s a stunning record when you consider the quality of sides they’ve faced, although it’s also true that they are yet to record a European home win this season, taking just 1 point from their 3 home group games. Atleti come into this one following a disappointing league defeat at Mallorca, although they would’ve had one eye on the 2nd Leg of this tie.

Manchester City meanwhile were involved in a high stakes Premier League game against title rivals Liverpool at the weekend. A frenetic 2-2 draw leaves that race finely poised but Atleti will be hoping it at least sapped some energy from Pep Guardiola’s side. City do have an array of riches though with the likes of Ikay Gundogan, Jack Grealish and Riyad Mahrez all contenders to return to the XI here.

The pattern of the game is likely to be similar to the 1st Leg with Manchester City likely to dominate possession but they may get some more space to play in here with Atleti having to roll the dice to some extent. The absence of Ruben Dias in particular suggests Atleti can create chances against this City side but in a season largely defined by uncharacteristic defensive uncertainty, it will be a big ask for the hosts to keep a clean sheet.

Head to Head

  • The clubs met for the first time last week with City winning 1-0 in Manchester.

Team News

Jose Gimenez is a doubt again for Atleti and his return would be a major boost. Hector Herrera is injured.

Ruben Dias and Cole Palmer are out injured for the visitors. Jack Grealish and Riyad Mahrez may rotate into the front three after missing out against Liverpool.

Possible Lineups

Atletico Madrid vs Manchester City Predictions

Score Prediction: Atletico Madrid 1-1 Manchester City (Agg: 2-1 Manchester City)

This is the ultimate contrast of styles and while Pep Guardiola’s brand of football may be more eye-catching, his ability to make just one Champions League Final since leaving Barcelona a decade ago, is testament to the reality that it doesn’t always deliver results on these big European nights.

There did appear to be a genuine gulf in quality between the two sides in the 1st Leg and providing he doesn’t over-complicate things, City should have just enough to get the draw that would take them through to the last four. An early Atleti goal would really ignite what should be a cauldron of an atmosphere at the Wanda Metropolitano though, so it would be foolish to write Atleti off merely based on what we saw in the 1st Leg.
