Real Sociedad vs Atletico Madrid Preview

Real Sociedad stadium

One of the ties of the round in the Copa del Rey sees Real Sociedad face off against Atletico Madrid at the Reale Arena on Wednesday. This has the potential to be a cracking cup tie between two sides who will fancy their chances of going all the way in the competition if they progress.

Real Sociedad are the 2020 holders, although with that trophy won last season due to the Covid delay of the all Basque Final, those memories are still very fresh. A long cup run may help to revitalise La Real’s 2021/22 campaign which has faded badly after a bright start. They have made a somewhat better start to 2022 with 4 points from their 2 league games to date, as well as a Copa del Rey victory at Leganes in the last round.

Imanol isn’t exactly a man under pressure having delivered top six finishes on top of that long awaited piece of silverware. However it is an important few months coming up as he seeks to prove he is the man capable of taking Real Sociedad to that next level which many believe they are good enough to reach given the array of quality young players they have in their ranks.

Diego Simeone also delivered a trophy for his club in 2021 in the form of the league title but memories of those celebrations in Valladolid on the final day of last term must feel increasingly distant in the midst of what has been a fairly woeful attempt at a title defence. Atleti have already lost 5 league games this season with 4 of those losses coming in succession in recent weeks and they are as good as out of the title race even at this early stage.

The Copa del Rey is a big focus now for Cholo and if there was any doubt about that, you only have to look at the team he named, for what was effectively a home game against minnows Rayo Majadahonda in the last round. Atleti won that match 5-0 and will be desperate for victory here at Anoeta and their chances of claiming silverware this term largely depend on it following defeat to Athletic Club in last week’s Supercopa.

Head to Head

  • Last 6 Competitive Meetings: 3 Atletico Madrid Wins, 1 Real Sociedad Win, 2 Draws.
  • Atleti are unbeaten in 4 games against La Real.
  • The sides drew 2-2 at the Wanda Metropolitano earlier in the campaign.
  • The last 6 meetings in Donostia have produced 3 wins each.

Team News

La Real still have a number of injury issues to deal with and are expected to be missing Martin Zubimendi, Alexander Isak, Ander Barrenetxea and Nacho Monreal here. New boy Rafinha should start again.

Atleti are expected to be missing Geoffrey Kondogbia and Marcos Llorente to injuries.

Real Sociedad vs Atletico Madrid Predictions

Score Prediction: Real Sociedad 1-0 Atletico Madrid

This is likely to be a fiercely contested cup tie between two teams who will be very hungry for a place in the last eight. It should be a good advert for the Copa del Rey but Atleti’s form has been so poor of late that it’s hard to fancy their chances in this game and with home advantage, Real Sociedad might just have enough to seal progress.
