Real Sociedad vs Real Madrid Preview

Real Sociedad and Real Madrid face off in a key top of the table clash in LaLiga on Saturday. Los Blancos have opened up a significant 7 point advantage on the chasing pack over the past fortnight. Victory here really would put them in a commanding position and would also surely extinguish any realistic hopes La Real had of competing for the title.

What Imanol will be desperate to do is ensure that his team’s current dip in form doesn’t turn into a severe slump as was the case last winter. They come into this game following a goalless draw with Valencia and 1-0 defeat at Espanyol and a lack of goals really is a worry for La Real at the moment. They’ve not managed to score more than once at home all season in any competition which is something of a mystery given the attacking talents they do possess.

Their results have actually taken a turn for the worse since their injury problems have eased but they did pick up a morale boosting 4-0 win over minnows Panaderia Pulido in the Copa del Rey in midweek. Imanol was able to rest most of his star names in preparation for a huge week or so which also sees them host PSV in a decisive Europa League game.

Real Madrid are one of the few Spanish teams already through in Europe but they will be eager to top the group when they host Inter in the Champions League on Tuesday. Evenso, Carlo Ancelotti has shown little interest in rotating his key players. Vini Junior has started all of the club’s last 18 games in all competitions and it seems likely Los Blancos are just going to go with their strongest players over the next week which concludes with the Madrid derby.

That’s a risky policy and we have perhaps already seen some evidence of fatigue and tiredness creeping in. They have been second best for large periods of their last two matches in LaLiga against Sevilla and Athletic Club but still managed to emerge with maximum points on both occasions to underline their status as clear title favourites by opening up a 7 point lead at the top.

Head to Head

  • Last 6 Competitive Meetings: 2 Real Madrid Wins, 2 Real Sociedad Wins, 2 Draws.
  • Both meetings last season were drawn.
  • Real Madrid have won on 4 of their last 6 trips to Donostia overall.
  • The exception was a 3-1 defeat in LaLiga in May 2019.

Team News

Aritz Elustondo is banned for the hosts who are also without David Silva due to injury.

Gareth Bale and Dani Ceballos are the only absentees for Los Blancos.

Possible Lineups

Real Sociedad vs Real Madrid Predictions

Score Prediction: Real Sociedad 1-1 Real Madrid

It’ll be interesting to see how Real Madrid approach this. They will respect Real Sociedad and you sense they may see a draw as a good result given the advantage they currently have and this game being situated in the middle of an intense run of difficult fixtures. If Real Madrid come with an air of caution about them, then La Real may again struggle for goals at home and a goalless or low-scoring draw could be on the cards.
