Elche vs Sevilla Preview

Elche stadium

Sevilla travel to Elche looking to make it three wins from three to start the new season. Julen Lopetegui rotated on this ground last season and Sevilla suffered a damaging defeat which they would live to really regret given how they managed to climb back into title contention for a brief period towards the end of the season.

For Elche, that surprise win was something of a launchpad for their survival push and it was their home record which largely ensured they would beat the drop on their top flight return. Since Escriba took charge, Elche have won 4 and only lost 2 of their 9 LaLiga games at the Estadio Manuel Martínez Valero and they are going to need to turn it into something of a fortress again you’d imagine if they are going to beat the drop this season.

To their credit, they competed really well away to Atletico Madrid last weekend too, losing only 1-0 to the Spanish champions. Elche had 59% possession in that game, with Escriba starting to get this team playing a passing style but they are yet to score this season and with little in the way of clear openings created in either of their opening two games. The trip to Madrid saw former Argentina international Darío Benedetto make his debut off the bench and he could be pushing for a start here as Elche seek a greater goal threat.

As for Sevilla, they have been very busy in the transfer market with Monchi attempting to work his magic once more. The money they’ve spent suggests they could soon allow Jules Kounde to join Chelsea which will be a major blow in some respects, but this is a club that has achieved its success by selling key players and recruiting well.

There have been no fewer than four new arrivals over the past week or so. Gonzalo Montiel, Ludwig Augustinsson, Rafa Mir and Thomas Delaney have all arrived at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan and all of a sudden, there is real depth to this Sevilla squad. All four will have to work hard if they are going to make Julen Lopetegui’s first choice starting XI though with Sevilla having made a good start to the season with wins to nil over Rayo and Getafe. Another new boy, Erik Lamela, has been the star so far scoring 3 of his team’s 4 goals.

Team News

Elche are only likely to be missing Pablo Piatti through injury. New signing Benedetto may get the nod up top.

Lucas Ocampos remains an injury doubt. New signing Thomas Delaney can’t feature here but some of the other new arrivals could feature on the bench.

Predicted Elche Starting Lineup:

Casilla – Bigas, Verdu, Roco – Mojica, Fidel, Marcone, Guti, Palacios – Benedetto, Boye (3-5-2)

Predicted Sevilla Starting Lineup:

Dmitrovic – Acuna, Carlos, Kounde, Navas – Fernando, Jordan – Lamela, Gomez, Suso – En-Nesyri (4-2-3-1)

Elche vs Sevilla Predictions

Score Prediction: Elche 0-1 Sevilla

This is a clash between two teams that like to keep the ball but can be a bit slow to move it forwards so it may be a game that takes a while to heat up. Elche are capable of frustrating their opponents but Sevilla will find a way through at some point in the game and should make it three straight wins to start the 2021/22 season.
