Valencia vs Getafe Preview

LaLiga returns on Friday night for the first of 380 games in the 2021/22 season. While a match between the teams that finished 13th and 15th last term, may not sound like the most exciting way to start the new campaign, there’s plenty of reason to tune in. These two clubs have developed a strange rivalry in recent years after a series of ill-tempered meetings and things got all the weirder this summer as Getafe boss José Bordalás moved to Valencia.

Bordalás, it’s safe to say, was hardly Mr Popular in these parts and it’ll be interesting to see what kind of reception he gets from the fans inside Mestalla. We should also learn a bit more about how he plans to set up this Valencia side. His Getafe was always one of the most physical in LaLiga and at times very direct but he may feel as though with slightly more tools at his disposal, he can afford to go in a different direction.

The likes of Carlos Soler are in theory unlikely to thrive in a Bordalás team but the new boss will need to find a way to utilise the creative abilities of some of his more technically gifted players. Much like his predecessor, Bordalás hasn’t had much help in the transfer market with Portuguese centre-back Omar Alderete the only new arrival, but unlike last year there hasn’t been a major summer exodus with all of Valencia’s key men still at the club.

Getafe meanwhile are also under new management of course and it’ll be equally interesting to see just how quickly Michel tries to change things. He returns to the club after a decade and inherits a team that flirted with danger last season having previously seriously overperformed, even reaching Europe in 2019.

Expectation levels will be slightly lower as a result of that 15th place finish in 2020/21 and that may just help Michel get the time he needs to freshen things up with mid-table a more realistic target for Getafe this season. They’ve done some interesting business with Carles Aleñá converting his loan deal into a permanent transfer while Vitolo and 21 year old Mexican forward José Macías are capable of making a big impression on loan. Overall we are likely to see a slightly more expansive style of play under Michel but it may be some time before that yields positive results.

Head to Head

  • Last 6 Competitive Meetings: 1 Valencia Win, 2 Getafe Wins, 3 Draws.
  • Getafe are unbeaten in 5 games against Valencia since a dramatic late 3-1 defeat in the Copa del Rey which largely started the bad blood between the clubs.
  • The last 3 meetings have produced 4 red cards.
  • The most recent was a 3-0 Getafe win in Madrid earlier this year.

Team News

Valencia have some selection issues here with Lee Kang-In likely to miss out following his involvement in the Olympics. There are also doubts over their two main goalkeepers which could see 20 year old Giorgi Mamardashvili make an unexpected debut in goal.

David Timor is suspended for Getafe. New arrivals José Macías and Vitolo are fitness doubts and the same goes for Allan Nyom.

Predicted Valencia Starting Lineup:

Mamardashvili – Gaya, Alderete, Gabriel, Correia – Cheryshev, Racic, Soler, Wass – Guedes, Gomez (4-4-2)

Predicted Getafe Starting Lineup:

Soria – Olivera, Mitrovic, Djene, Damian – Arambarri, Alena, Maksimovic – Cucurella, Unal, Mata (4-3-3)

Valencia vs Getafe Predictions

Score Prediction: Valencia 0-0 Getafe

Bordalás will be under pressure at Valencia from the off and he’ll be desperate to make a positive start against his former employers. Getafe have had the better pre-season though, conceding just once in six matches and it feels as though we could see quite a cagey game here with little in the way of goalmouth action.

Fantasy Football Picks

Defenders may be your best option from a fantasy football perspective here with a defensive game quite possible. There may be value in picking some of Getafe’s backline with Djene Dakonam a certain starter in central defence. Gabriel Paulista looks like the best option on Sorare. With a L15 average of 60, he was Valencia’s star performer for much of last season and is sure to be an integral part of their plans again this term.
