Friday’s early Segunda Division clash sees Leganes continue their push for promotion with an away game against relegation strugglers Cartagena. The visitors really are on a charge now and they will move 3rd even with a draw here but they’ll be hoping to keep their impressive winning streak going.

It was always going to be difficult for Cartagena on their return to this level after eight years in the Segunda B. The side from the Murcia region has been competitive but they are in the relegation zone heading into this weekend and it does look as though their fight for survival could go to the very wire this term.

They sank to a 2-0 defeat at Las Palmas last time out, after a decent run of 3 games without a defeat. That included an excellent return of 4 points from home games against high-flying Rayo Vallecano and Real Oviedo. Recently appointed Luis Carrión would probably settle for a point here in truth but overall their home record of just 4 wins on their own ground, does need to improve if they are going to beat the drop.

It won’t be here against what is essentially the form team in the Segunda Division. Five straight wins have thrust Leganes right back into automatic promotion contention and suddenly what looked a three-horse race for a top two finish, now most definitely involves four sides. They will go level on points with 2nd placed Espanyol were they to win this and we’d have the three teams relegated from LaLiga last term, making up the top three in the second tier.

Sometimes coaches returning to former clubs don’t manage to recreate the magic of their first spell. However that hasn’t been a problem for Asier Garitano so far. Back at Butarque, Leganes’ most successful ever coach has won every game since taking charge again in January. Right now the momentum really is with the South Madrid club as they bid to return to the top flight after final day heartbreak last term.

Head to Head

  • Last 3 Meetings: 2 Leganes Wins, 1 Cartagena Win.
  • Leganes won 3-1 at Butarque when the sides met earlier this term.
  • That was the first clash since the 2008/09 Segunda B season when both meetings produced home wins.

Cartaena vs Leganes Predictions

Score Prediction: Cartagena 1-2 Leganes

While 4 of Leganes’ 5 matches since Garitano returned have been at Butarque, where they were already doing well, he does seem to have injected some life into Leganes’ season and they will be full of confidence heading into this one. The visitors ought to have enough quality to see off struggling opposition.
