Sevilla vs Borussia Dortmund Preview
An intriguing Champions League last 16 tie kicks off at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan on Wednesday. This is a really tough one to call and while Borussia Dortmund are the top seeds having won their group, Sevilla will really fancy their chances of progressing to the Quarter-Finals having been the more impressive side since the end of the group stage.
Julen Lopetegui received plenty of criticism for his decision to rest players in their decisive group game against Chelsea. A 4-0 loss ensured Sevilla would finish 2nd in the group and Sevilla would lose their subsequent league game anyway. However two months on and with a more favourable draw than they could have got, Lopetegui won’t be regretting his decision one bit and he is again showing what a good coach he is with this Sevilla team in fine form.
They’ve won 9 straight matches in all competitions, so couldn’t seriously be heading into this in better spirits. Defensively they have been outstanding with centre-backs Jules Kounde and Diego Carlos continuing to impress while Bono has made the number one jersey his own with some outstanding displays. Sevilla have gone over 600 minutes without conceding and if they can add another 90 onto that here, they should be in a strong position to advance.
Borussia Dortmund will be desperate for at least one away goal and there can be no doubting they have the talent to get it. Erling Haaland is clearly the main danger man but they haven’t fully convinced across the pitch this season with even Jadon Sancho not at his best for much of it.
Down in 6th in the Bundesliga, they face a battle just to qualify for next season’s competition and have only won 1 of their last 7 matches overall inside 90 minutes. Significantly though they have scored in every game they’ve played this season with the sole exception of a 2-0 defeat at Augsburg back in September.
Head to Head
- Previous 2 Competitive Meetings: 1 Sevilla Win, 1 Draw.
- The only previous clashes came in the 2010/11 Europa League group stage.
- Sevilla won 1-0 in Dortmund while the sides drew 2-2 at the RSP.
Team News
First team regulars Jesus Navas, Marcos Acuna and Lucas Ocampos are all injury doubts for Sevilla.
Dortmund are missing first choice keeper Roman Burki and Axel Witsel to injury. Thomas Delaney has stayed in Germany with his wife expecting the birth of a child.
Predicted Sevilla Starting Lineup:
Bono – Rekik, Carlos, Kounde, Vidal – Jordan, Fernando, Rakitic – Gomez, En-Nesyri, Suso (4-3-3)
Predicted Borussia Dortmund Starting Lineup:
Hitz – Guerreiro, Hummels, Akanji, Meunier – Dahoud, Bellingham – Reyna, Reus, Sancho – Haaland (4-2-3-1)
Sevilla vs Borussia Dortmund Predictions
Score Prediction: Sevilla 2-1 Borussia Dortmund
Sevilla are playing some excellent football right now and look solid from front to back. They look capable of largely controlling the tempo of this and beating an out of sorts Dortmund side. However the possible absence of their two first choice full-backs is a genuine concern with the German side dangerous down the flanks with youngsters Gio Reyna and Jadon Sancho. Borussia look capable of ending Sevilla’s run of consecutive clean sheets and getting an all important away goal.
