Atletico Madrid make the long trip to the Russian capital for a Tuesday night game in the Champions League. It feels like a pivotal match in their group stage campaign. Victory would propel them onto 6 points and they’d be very well placed to qualify despite that heavy loss in Munich on MD1. Anything less would leave them with some high pressure games in this competition when we return from the international break.

Diego Simeone’s side have won all of their three matches since that defeat to Bayern. They were in big trouble in this group when they fell 2-1 down at home to Salzburg last week but Joao Felix helped turn the game on its head and he backed that up with another brace as Atleti won 3-1 at Osasuna in LaLiga at the weekend.

We’ve had to wait a while but we are now starting to get a clearer picture of just why Atletico Madrid smashed their transfer record to sign the Portuguese forward who will turn 21 next week. Simeone though will be slightly concerned by a defence that has conceded 6 goals in 2 matches in this competition so far, most unlike Atletico.

Lokomotiv Moscow were always going to be the rank outsiders in this group. They are only 7th in the Russian Premier League which is at a more advanced stage than most European leagues. However they have shown they can be awkward opponents by holding Salzburg and only narrowly losing 2-1 against defending champions Bayern so far in this group.

Atleti will therefore need to bring their A game to this match if they are going to leave Moscow with an important victory.

Head to Head

  • Last 5 Competitive Meetings: 4 Atleti Wins, 1 Draw.
  • The sides met in the Champions League group stage last season with Atleti winning both games 2-0.
  • Atleti were 8-1 aggregate winners against Lokomotiv in the 2017/18 Europa League last 16.

Team News

Lokomotiv may go with an unchanged lineup from the side that played Bayern last week.

Diego Costa and Yannick Carrasco are both sidelined for Atleti.

Predicted Lokomotiv Moscow Starting Lineup:

Guilherme – Rybus, Cerqueira, Corluka, Zhivoglyadov – Krychowiak, Kulikov, Ignatjev – Smolov, Miranchuk – Luis (4-3-2-1)

Predicted Atletico Madrid Starting Lineup:

Oblak – Lodi, Gimenez, Savic, Trippier – Koke, Torreira, Llorente, Correa – Felix, Suarez (4-4-2)

Lokomotiv Moscow vs Atletico Madrid Predictions

Score Prediction: Lokomotiv Moscow 1-2 Atletico Madrid

Back-to-back braces will have done the confidence levels of Joao Felix the world of good. He is starting to provide the attacking spark that Atleti have lacked since Antoine Griezmann departed and while Lokomotiv have been more competitive than many would have expected, Atleti should still get the win here.
