Real Valladolid vs Athletic Bilbao Match Preview
Athletic are back in their regular 14:00 slot this Sunday to take on Real Valladolid at the Jose Zorrilla. The Basques head here on the back of a Semi-Final win in the Copa del Rey so they should be in good spirits despite a disappointing run of form in La Liga since the turn of the year.
Real Valladolid are up against Basque opposition for the second weekend running here having lost 1-0 at Real Sociedad last time out. They’d won two of their four games prior to that though to ease their relegation concerns. Real Valladolid could go as much as 10 points clear of the relegation zone this weekend depending on other results and they’d be only 2 points behind Athletic were they to win this. They have been drawing more than they’ve been winning on home soil this term though with a huge 58% of their league matches at the Jose Zorrilla having ended up all square.
Over half of Athletic’s away league games have also finished level with the Basques having only recorded one away victory all season in La Liga. This though is a season that is now virtually all about the Copa del Rey for Gaizka Garitano’s side. They scored a vital late away goal at Granada in midweek to set up a cup final date against local rivals Real Sociedad.
Garitano will now face the challenge of trying to get his side to focus on their upcoming league games despite that huge date in Seville looming large. No side has picked up fewer points than Athletic over their last 8 league games and this won’t be easy against a Real Valladolid side that will continue to scrap for their lives until they’ve secured another season at this level.

Score Prediction: 0-0 Draw
It’s hard to see many chances in this one. Athletic tend to sit deep when they play away and look to hit their opponents on the break. Real Valladolid aren’t blessed with much creativity and may struggle to break them down but they won’t over-commit so a low-scoring game looks on the cards with a draw perhaps the most likely outcome.
