Barcelona vs Real Madrid Preview

Eight months on from two Barcelona victories at the Bernabeu in the Spring, these two eternal rivals meet again with the stakes as high as ever. There is never such thing as a Clásico that doesn’t matter but this one feels big. The two sides are locked together on 35 points at the top of La Liga and while clearly this match alone won’t decide the title, it will almost certainly determine who holds the advantage and momentum heading into 2020.

Barcelona are the favourites. While they again struggled on the road at the weekend, their home form continues to be outstanding. Since being held by Real Madrid in the 1st Leg of the Copa del Rey Semi-Final last season, the Catalans have won 19 out of 20 home games in all competitions, with the only exception being their Champions League draw with Slavia Prague. They boast La Liga’s only 100% home record and are averaging an impressive 4.29 goals per home game in the Spanish top flight this term.

Real Madrid have been reasonably good on the road though with only 1 defeat in 8 away league games this season. That was very nearly two on Sunday night but Karim Benzema popped up to score a dramatic late leveller at Valencia. He has been one of the stars of the season so far in Spain and Zinedine Zidane will need his talisman to put in a big performance here with Los Blancos hampered by a few selection problems.

Their attacking options are limited by injuries to the likes of Eden Hazard, Lucas Vazquez and James Rodriguez. Rodrygo got the nod at Valencia but Zizou may turn to Gareth Bale here in the hope that the Welshman can put in a big game performance as he has done on many occasions in the past for Real Madrid. Casemiro will start in midfield after the Brazilian was rested at Valencia due to him being one game away from a ban.

Barcelona’s team is rather more straightforward to predict with Ivan Rakitic likely to continue in midfield. The biggest call for Ernesto Valverde may be whether to start Nelson Semedo or Sergi Roberto at right-back.

Barcelona vs Real Madrid Predictions

Score Prediction: 2-1 Barcelona

There are invariably goals when these two great rivals meet and we should see a few here although Zinedine Zidane has if anything been more cautious during his second stint in charge of Los Blancos and the visitors may look to play on the break here. It’s hard to see a repeat of last season’s 5-1 massacre but with Leo Messi on the pitch and both Luis Suarez and Antoine Griezmann boasting pretty good records against Real Madrid, Barça’s extra firepower could be decisive.
