The 2023/24 Spanish football season is on the horizon and many Sorare managers will be in the process of shopping for a goalkeeper for next season. With a shorter than normal summer break of just ten weeks, the new campaign will come around relatively quickly with prices already rising. Below we’ll take a look at all the LaLiga goalkeepers from top to bottom.
For each club (they are ranked in finishing order from last year plus the three newly promoted teams), we have info on each keeper, how much game-time they’ve had in 2022/23, what their contract situation is and what 2023/24 may hold in store.

Goalkeepers in LaLiga – A look ahead to 2023/24
Barcelona

We witnessed a goalkeeping masterclass from Marc-André ter Stegen who let in just 11 goals in his first 33 matches in LaLiga 2022/23 with only a late flurry of goals conceded after the title had been clinched denying him a host of records. With Barcelona winning 13 matches in all competition by 1-0 margins, the German routinely produced vital saves and it’s safe to say the Catalans would not have cruised towards the title were it not for his continued excellence.
The back-up keepers barely got a look-in with both Peña and Tenas warming the bench in LaLiga. The only Barça competitive matches this term not to feature Ter Stegen, saw Peña start twice in the early rounds of the Copa del Rey and once in the Champions League, suggesting he is ahead of Tenas in the pecking order. Peña also got some minutes off the bench late in the league campaign while Tenas got game-time for Barça B in the third tier and is currently starting for Spain U21 at the Euros.
What will happen in 2023/24?: Marc-André ter Stegen will surely start in LaLiga and in the Champions League again. Leo Messi’s move to Inter Miami means there is no longer as great a need to raise funds this summer and the chances of Ter Stegen (who didn’t get on particularly well with Messi) leaving look very slim.
There are mixed reports over Iñaki Peña’s future with the 24 year old reportedly attracting interest from Turkey and elsewhere in Spain, although he may be content with another year as back-up to Ter Stegen having extended his contract.
Barcelona still haven’t exercised the option of a two-year extension for Tenas who recently confirmed he will leave this summer while speaking at a Spain U21 press conference. The young keeper has a platform to show what he can do at the Euros and should have suitors when it’s over, unless we get any late U-turn from Barça.
Real Madrid

Arguably the best goalkeeper in the world, Thibaut Courtois has shown plenty more evidence of his quality this season and remains locked in as Real Madrid number one for the foreseeable future.
Injuries to Courtois ensured Andriy Lunin got game-time with 7 LaLiga and 2 Champions League starts. He enjoyed a decent run in the autumn, but his most recent appearance saw him save just one of five attempts on target in the 4-2 loss at Girona. Luis López has been the third choice goalkeeper for Los Blancos, frequently warming the bench.
What will happen in 2023/24?: Courtois will continue as number one in LaLiga and the Champions League. Lunin is reportedly keen to leave this summer in search of regular football which would most likely see Real Madrid look for a new back-up keeper in the transfer market. However no solution has been found for Lunin yet meaning there has been no move for a new number 2 with David Soria, Fernando Pacheco and Stole Dimitrievski initially reported as the three primary contenders.
Luis Lopez is out of contract with his future unclear with Real Madrid’s B team narrowly missing out on promotion to the Segunda Division. In any case, 20 year old Mario de Luis has been mostly keeping goal for Castilla in the Primera Federacion and earning positive reviews.
Atletico Madrid
After a very shaky 2021/22 campaign by his usually exceptionally high standards, Jan Oblak has been much more assured this time around. Only a late season injury prevented the Slovenian from passing 30 LaLiga starts for the 8th season in a row.
That presented opportunities to the competent Ivo Grbic who kept goal in Atleti’s final 8 league matches, although he remains firmly the back-up to Oblak when both are fit.
What will happen in 2023/24?: With Diego Simeone set to stay for another season, there appears to be little doubt that Jan Oblak will continue in goal at the Civitas Metropolitano next term as the starter in LaLiga and the Champions League.
Recent game-time may help convince Grbic to see out his contract in Madrid, although he’s likely to be open to a move should the opportunity to play regular first team football arise.
Real Sociedad

Having comfortably shaken off competition from Mat Ryan in 2021/22, Alex Remiro has been a rock for Real Sociedad, starting every game in LaLiga and all 8 of their Europa League matches.
After playing second tier football with Real Sociedad B in 2021/22, Andoni Zubiaurre has been the back-up keeper to Remiro this term. However his involvement has been limited to just one start in the Copa del Rey.
What will happen in 2023/24?: Remiro is locked in as La Real’s number one and looks set to get his first taste of Champions League football next term.
Zubiaurre was reportedly very close to joining Huesca last summer and may be open to a move. The prospect of being part of Real Sociedad’s likely Champions League adventure could tempt him to stick around until the end of his contract though, unless a clear shot at first team football arises.
Villarreal

The departure of number one Gerónimo Rulli to Ajax in January somewhat surprisingly did not lead to Villarreal signing an immediate replacement. Instead 40 year old Pepe Reina took over in goal for the Yellow Submarine and has at times started to look his age while youngster Filip Jörgensen has also seen action in the Conference League and on two occasions LaLiga.
Villarreal were also the only club with a B team in the 2022/23 Segunda Division with Iker Alvarez starting 23 games in the second tier as the Yellow Submarine avoided relegation.
What will happen in 2023/24?: A new starting goalkeeper is likely to be a top priority for Villarreal this summer. Croatian international Dominik Livaković was believed to be their top target but has interest from elsewhere while Cadiz’s Conan Ledesma and Valencia’s Giorgi Mamardashvili have also been mentioned.
Despite his age, Reina has extended his contract for another year while Álvarez has also signed a new deal. The continued presence of Villarreal B in the second tier should make it easy to ensure youngsters Jörgensen and Álvarez continue to get meaningful game-time.
Real Betis

After the constant rotation in 2021/22, there was a little bit more continuity in 2022/23 with Rui Silva the number one at Betis in LaLiga for much of the season. However Bravo enjoyed a late run of league starts adding doubt to the battle for supremacy once more.
Claudio Bravo was also the preferred option in 6 of the 8 Europa League games with Manuel Pellegrini still keen to give both men starts. Third choice Dani Martin hasn’t seen any minutes, having been Malaga’s first choice keeper throughout most of the 2021/22 season in the Segunda Division.
What will happen in 2023/24?: Pellegrini has been a long-term admirer of Bravo and despite his age, the Chilean has signed a contract extension which will see his stay at the Benito Villamarin extend past his 41st birthday.
Rui Silva has longer to run on his deal and is still the man most likely to be the main goalkeeper for Los Verdiblancos again in 2023/24, although we can expect plenty of rotation again with Betis in the Europa League once more.
Osasuna

Sergio Herrera started the season as the clear first choice in Pamplona, albeit with a more experienced competitor in the shape-up of new signing Aitor Fernandez. An injury to Herrera granted Aitor his chance just before the World Cup and Osasuna won their first three games with the former Levante keeper in goal, conceding just once.
That was enough for Aitor to effectively take over as Osasuna number one in LaLiga in 2023 and he has showcased a much higher level than we saw from him during the end of his time at Levante. Jagoba Arrasate’s side also enjoyed a successful run to the Copa del Rey Final which has made it easy for him to give game-time to Herrera, who started all the cup games and has also often rotated into the league XI.
What will happen in 2023/24?: The cup run made it quite easy for Arrasate to keep both keepers happy and UEFA Europa Conference League qualification secured on the final day, suggested there’d be an opportunity to do likewise in 2023/24. However due to a match-fixing case from a decade ago, UEFA look set to ban Osasuna from Europe next season, although that is subject to appeal.
Arrasate will have quite a big decision to make when matchday one of LaLiga 2023/24 rolls around. Assuming there are no departures (and everything indicates both men are happy at El Sadar with their relationship said to be very good), Aitor Fernandez and Sergio Herrera will be fighting for one place again.
It’s a tough one to call, but for now we can only assume that Aitor is slightly ahead given he has started the vast majority of league games since breaking into the team in October. He has also looked slightly more assured than Herrera but this is a fight that’s likely to continue throughout next season and Arrasate will most likely continue to rotate the two when the chance arises.
Athletic Club

Athletic are in a very strong position in the goalkeeping department with Unai Simon continuing to be their number one under Ernesto Valverde. The 25 year old was also Spain’s first choice at the 2022 World Cup and started both games in the recent UEFA Nations League Finals suggesting he’s still the preferred option for his country even after a change in coach.
22 year old Julen Agirrezabala is a bright prospect though and Valverde has trusted him with 14 starts in all competitions this season, including 7 in Athletic’s run to the Copa del Rey Semi-Finals.
What will happen in 2023/24?: Athletic are set to benefit should Osasuna be banned from Europe and Conference League football would make it easy for them to give minutes to both Simon and Agirrezabala next season, with the former almost certainly continuing as the primary keeper in LaLiga.
There may well come a point though when Athletic decide to cash in on one of their two keepers as keeping both happy will become increasingly difficult in the long-term.
Are we there yet? Perhaps, not quite. The Basques may not be ready to go all-in on Agirrezabala while Simon recently reaffirmed his desire to stay in Bilbao. With both players under contract until June 2025, this feels more like a situation that will need to be resolved next summer, unless a really big offer comes in for one of the two over the coming weeks.
Mallorca

Mallorca struggled badly in the goalkeeper department in 2021/22 but made a really smart addition last summer with the €2m purchase of Predrag Rajkovic, one of the signings of the season in LaLiga. The Serbian shot stopper started every game until the final few weeks, conceding at a rate of only marginally above a goal per game, great going for a mid-table keeper.
Dominik Greif and Leo Roman both warmed the bench throughout the campaign before each getting a start as the season wound down. They had only featured in the Copa del Rey prior to that with Greif getting 3 starts and Roman 1.
What will happen in 2023/24?: Everything points to Predrag Rajkovic continuing for another season in Palma as the clear number one.
Dominik Greif and Leo Roman both have three more years to run on their respective contracts though and with no opportunities for league minutes for either this term, it’s almost certain at least one will leave. Mallorca still view Roman as a big prospect for the future so may look to loan him out with Real Oviedo reportedly keen, but it’s questionable whether Greif would be happy with a third season warming the bench.
Girona

Girona started LaLiga 2023/24 with only one senior goalkeeper and left it late to add another with Paulo Gazzaniga arriving on loan from Fulham on September 1st.
Michel initially kept faith with veteran keeper Juan Carlos, Girona’s number one in the promotion winning 2021/22 campaign, but Gazzaniga has held the jersey since taking over for the draw against Osasuna back in October. He performed pretty well behind a somewhat shaky defence with a PSxG-GA (post shot xG – goals allowed) of +8.3, the third best in LaLiga behind Ter Stegen and Elche’s Edgar Badia, indicating an above average ability to save shots.
What will happen in 2023/24?: Girona have agreed a deal to sign Gazzaniga on a free transfer and he looks certain to start the new campaign as the number one again.
Juan Carlos was out of contract this summer but has signed a one year contract extension suggesting he’ll be the back-up to Gazzaniga again.
Rayo Vallecano

Despite the arrival of veteran keeper Diego Lopez from Espanyol, Stole Dimitrievski has continued to hold his position in goal for Rayo. While rarely in the conversation when it comes to talk of the best LaLiga goalkeepers, the Macedonian has done a solid job in another pretty successful season for the Madrid club.
Veteran Diego Lopez, Espanyol’s number one last term, was restricted to three Copa del Rey starts and just the one appearance in LaLiga with Miguel Morro the clear third choice.
What will happen in 2023/24?: It’s likely to be a summer of change in Vallecas with some key players departing and highly rated young coach Andoni Iraola has already moved to Bournemouth with a new boss not yet installed (at the time of writing).
That leaves the goalkeeping situation up in the air to some extent with Dimitrievski one of a number of reported targets for Real Madrid as back-up to Courtois. If that move doesn’t come to pass, we can expect Dimitrievski to remain first choice in Vallecas.
Diego Lopez will leave the club when his contract expires in June which may see Miguel Morro promoted to number two unless another option arises for the young keeper to get game-time elsewhere.
Sevilla

There is also competition for the starting role at Sevilla after what was a rollercoaster season with Julen Lopetegui and Jorge Sampaoli departing as the Andalusians battled relegation before a remarkable resurgence under José Luis Mendilibar.
Bono was the long-serving and fairly clear number one, but Mendilibar placed his faith in Dmitrović with the Serb, who he knew well from his time at Eibar, taking over as the league starter as Sevilla catapulted themselves up the table. It wasn’t all bad news for Bono though with the Moroccan preferred in Europe as Sevilla won a remarkable seventh Europa League.
What will happen in 2023/24?: Bono’s future remains up in the air despite that European triumph with a move abroad still looking likely.
Mendilibar will stay as coach having agreed a new deal which should be good news for Dmitrović, although having secured Champions League qualification, it’s likely Sevilla will want to bring in another strong keeper to at least compete with the Serb, assuming Bono goes.
Celta Vigo

Although not always convincing, summer signing Agustin Marchesin was Celta’s first choice keeper until a torn Achilles suffered in training in early February ruled him out for the season.
That presented Ivan Villar with an unexpected opportunity to rekindle his Celta career and the 25 year old has started every game since. Veteran Brazilian keeper Diego Alves was briefly added on a free transfer following Marchesin’s injury but has since been released without playing a game.
What will happen in 2023/24?: Marchesin’s injury is likely to rule him out of the opening couple of months of next season too. The 35 year old is far from guaranteed to regain his place when he gets fit and he’ll have a new coach to impress with Rafa Benitez taking over at Balaidos this summer.
Ivan Villar stands a chance of holding onto the jersey, but could face competition from Ruben Blanco who will return from a loan spell at Marseille where he has mostly been a back-up in Ligue 1. The French club are reportedly keen on keeping Blanco for next year though which could see Celta dive into the market for a new keeper with Andriy Lunin having been linked.
Cadiz

Conan Ledesma started every game in LaLiga 2021/22 and was on course to do likewise again as Cadiz’s undisputed number one until he received a four game ban following altercations after a bad-tempered clash with Getafe in March.
That finally gave the patient David Gil some game-time and he didn’t let his side down during Ledesma’s absence, but it wasn’t enough to keep his place with the Argentine keeper immediately returning to the eleven on the completion of his ban.
What will happen in 2023/24?: With both goalkeepers under contract until June 2025, we will most likely see the same again with Gil acting as Ledesma’s deputy.
Ledesma is perhaps Cadiz’s most valuable player though and it wouldn’t be a major shock if a bigger club came calling for the 30 year old who was named in one European Best XI this year alongside the likes of Leo Messi.
Getafe

As has been the case for close to five years now, David Soria was Getafe’s undisputed number one in LaLiga 2022/23 and the 30 year old had another solid season despite his team’s struggles. Getafe survived on the final weekend, extending their top flight status for another year.
Kiko Casilla and Diego Conde warmed the bench all season without seeing minutes in LaLiga. Casilla did at least get some action in the early rounds of the Copa del Rey.
What will happen in 2023/24?: David Soria has been the source of much speculation and is reportedly Real Madrid’s preferred option as their new number 2. Getafe are in a stronger bargaining position having avoided relegation though and the latest reports suggest negotiations may have broken down over any possible move.
The other two keepers are both set to leave with Kiko Casilla becoming a free agent while Diego Conde has agreed to rejoin second tier Leganes. We can expect at least one new keeper to arrive at Getafe as a result, potentially two should Soria end up departing.
Valencia

One of the few bright lights for Valencia over the past couple of years, Giorgi Mamardashvili has emerged as the brightest young goalkeeper in Spanish football with the 22 year old starting every game in LaLiga 2022/23.
Back-up Jaume Domenech suffered an ACL injury in September, but he was back on the bench by the end of the season. Experienced Iago Herrerin was signed as cover for Jaume but hasn’t been needed.
What will happen in 2023/24?: €25m rated Giorgi Mamardashvili was initially signed to play for Valencia’s B team two years ago but injuries quickly provided the young Georgian with a chance and he is now arguably the club’s most prized asset. With finances tight at Mestalla, that could see them cash in with a host of major European clubs linked with the 22 year old.
It’s highly unlikely that Jaume Domenech would be trusted as the starting goalkeeper, so we can expect Valencia to sign a replacement for Mamardashvili in the event that he departs. Herrerin meanwhile will leave when his contract expires in June.
Almeria

Fernando Pacheco was widely expected to be the starting goalkeeper at Almeria when he signed for the newly promoted club last summer. However a combination of clashes with the board and the strong form of Fernando Martinez saw him leave to join Espanyol without starting a league game in January.
Fernando Martinez continued to be the preferred option for coach Rubi, starting all but one of Almeria’s LaLiga matches on their return to the top flight. Diego Mariño, signed from Sporting Gijon in January, was the new back-up option.
What will happen in 2023/24?: Despite avoiding relegation on the final weekend, Almeria will have a new coach next season after Rubi’s departure. The identity of that man is not yet known which makes second guessing the starting goalkeeper a bit tougher.
As it stands, Fernando Martinez is the most likely starter when August comes around with Diego Mariño also remaining, but Saudi-owned Almeria do have deeper pockets than some clubs and depending on the new coach, may consider looking for a fresh option in goal.
Granada

Granada lost bright young keeper Luis Maximiano following relegation in 2022 but have secured an immediate return to the top flight as second tier champions.
Raúl Fernández and Andre Ferreira fought for the starting role with the experienced Spaniard the number one until a late season injury enabled Ferreira to return to the starting XI for the successful run-in following injury problems of his own.
What will happen in 2023/24?: Granada look likely to stick with their two main goalkeepers for next season with Segunda Zamora Trophy winner Raúl Fernández having triggered a contract extension in April.
Promotion also means that Andre Ferreira has had an extra two years added to his contract and the Portuguese keeper will be hoping to provide strong competition for Raúl Fernández who is the more likely starter when the new season kicks off.
Las Palmas

Álvaro Vallés has been the clear first choice at Las Palmas, starting all but two of the 36 games he has been available for. The 25 year old was an ever present during the final months of the season as Las Palmas secured promotion to the top flight.
Álex Domínguez has mostly had to be content with a place on the bench, making just 8 starts, having started 10 times the season before in the second tier for Ibiza.
What will happen in 2023/24?: Both goalkeepers have another year to run on their contracts but Álex Domínguez has reportedly asked to leave given he is clear second choice. That makes it likely we’ll see a new goalkeeper arrive in Gran Canaria to provide competition for Vallés with Cartagena’s Aarón Escandell rumoured to be one option.
Alaves

Following the departure of Fernando Pacheco and relegation in 2022, Antonio Sivera finally got his chance as the starting goalkeeper in Vitoria and the 26 year old has enjoyed a strong campaign, starting all but one regular season game and every play-off match as Alaves clinched promotion in dramatic fashion.
Youngster Jesus Owono has been the back-up but with Sivera staying fit, has made just one start.
What will happen in 2023/24?: After a solid campaign, Sivera looks to have done enough to start next year as a top flight goalkeeper.
As it stands, there is no suggestion that Owono will leave either. So for now we can assume that it’ll be a similar situation next term, although (at the time of writing) only a week has passed since Alaves’ promotion was confirmed so plans for next year are a bit behind those of other clubs.
