Real Betis vs Celta Vigo Preview

Real Betis and Celta Vigo face off at the Benito Villamarin in the late game on Saturday in LaLiga. It’s the second home game in four days for Betis following their midweek 2-1 defeat against Barcelona.
It does feel like Betis haven’t really been at their best since a fair bit before the World Cup which is a concern for Manuel Pellegrini. They’ve still picked up points including wins away to Rayo and Getafe in 2023 but it hasn’t been that convincing from them in truth. Losing Alex Moreno was a blow while Sergio Canales hasn’t had his best season with only 1 goal and no assists in LaLiga 2022/23 for the talented midfielder.
Having a relatively old squad, at least in terms of their key players, did mean that some attempt at rebuilding was always going to be necessary and it’s a situation Betis will continue to manage. They’ve looked to Brazil for fresh young blood with Luiz Henrique a successful summer addition while they’ll be hoping for a similar impact from his 22 year old compatriot Abner, signed in January to replace Moreno at left-back.
As for Celta, it was a fairly quiet January with forgotten man Denis Suarez finally departing to join Espanyol on loan. They did add one player with Swiss forward Haris Seferovic coming in from Benfica. He could be a useful option for Carlos Carvalhal in the final third as the Galician side have once again been very dependent on Iago Aspas for goals.
Celta suffered a really cruel blow on Friday though, just three days on from deadline day, with first choice goalkeeper Agustin Marchesín suffering a suspected torn achilles tendon in training. That will most likely rule him out for the rest of the season with Ivan Villar set to come in for a Celta side that has only lost 1 of their last 9 games in all competitions (inside 90 minutes).

BANNED | William Carvalho |
Possible XI: Silva – Miranda, Pezzella, Felipe, Sabaly – Guido, Guardado – Juanmi, Canales, Henrique – Iglesias (4-2-3-1)

Celta Vigo
INJURED | Marchesin |
DOUBTFUL | |
BANNED |
Possible XI: Villar – Nunez, Aidoo, Mingueza – Galan, Cervi, Beltran, Veiga, Mallo – Aspas, Larsen (3-5-2)
Coach: Carlos Carvalhal
Score Prediction: Real Betis 1-1 Celta Vigo
Celta have looked solid under Carvalhal and they don’t give up anywhere near as many chances now. The goalkeeper change does have the potential to unsettle things a bit defensively but with Betis not on top of their game, and perhaps suffering a bit of fatigue following their midweek game and a busy January, Celta could get a result here.
