Barcelona vs Real Sociedad Preview
A strong Copa del Rey Quarter-Final lineup commences on Wednesday with a meeting of the teams currently 1st and 3rd in LaLiga. Barcelona will be the favourites with home advantage but Real Sociedad are red hot right now and will fancy their chances.
Barcelona have won their last 6 competitive games although that does include a period of Extra Time against Intercity earlier in the Copa del Rey and a penalty shootout against Betis in the Supercopa. They weren’t great at the weekend in LaLiga either with a 1-0 home win over Getafe coming thanks to Pedri’s goal in the First Half.
They were still missing Robert Lewandowski for that game but his 3 match suspension in the league has had the unintended benefit of providing a boost to their domestic cup aspirations. The Polish striker has already helped steer Barcelona comfortably past Real Madrid in the Supercopa Final and is in line to start here given he is suspended again this weekend in the league against Girona.
That’s a bit of a blow to Real Sociedad’s chances as Barcelona have looked considerably less threatening in their two league games so far without their main striker. The visitors won’t be too worried about the opposition though as they are doing brilliantly themselves with nine straight wins in all competitions in a run that stretches back well before the World Cup.
Imanol has taken this competition seriously with a strong lineup seeing off Mallorca in Donostia in the Last 16 last week. La Real backed that up with an excellent win at Rayo in the league at the weekend despite the absences of Mikel Merino and Martin Zubimendi, two members of their influential midfield quartet. There is an impressive depth to their squad with so many talented academy graduates filling it out. La Real are likely to name something close to their best XI here though as they target a place in the last four.

Real Sociedad have been terrific in recent weeks and they are capable of giving Barcelona a really tough game here. However La Real’s record on this ground is notoriously poor and they may be made to pay here by the returning Robert Lewandowski, fit and fresh from a weekend rest.
