Getafe vs Espanyol Preview

Sunday’s LaLiga double-header commences at the Coliseum Alfonso Perez where Getafe are up against Espanyol. It’s a meeting of two teams who have slightly underperformed this season relative to their pre-season expectations and the priority for both will now be to simply make sure they stay in the league.
Getafe have a two point cushion on the drop-zone at this point and will see this as an opportunity to give themselves some more breathing space. They haven’t found as much consistency or momentum at home this season when compared to last year’s fine run of home wins as they recovered from a dreadful start. It’s just 9 points from 8 games on home soil this term but they did put in a strong showing in their last home match.
That produced a 2-0 win over Mallorca with Borja Mayoral netting both goals and they really did boss that game with their opponents failing to register a shot on target. Getafe performed quite well last weekend too, competing against Sevilla throughout at the Sanchez-Pizjuan but they ended up on the wrong end of a 2-1 scoreline with Mayoral again on target to continue his strong start after the break.
For Espanyol, the return to action has largely brought more of the same for Diego Martinez and his team. They’ve started with two Catalan derbies against Barcelona and Girona, both of which finished level to make it 5 draws from 6 league games overall. Their season tally of 8 draws is 2 more than any other side in the division.
While any result was clearly a bonus at Camp Nou, they would have wanted to build on that last time out but they didn’t really deserve anything more than a point against Girona. Vinicius Souza was a significant midfield absentee due to suspension and once more they didn’t look fully convincing defensively with the visitors ultimately good value for their 85th minute leveller, scored by former Espanyol player Yangel Herrera.

Score Prediction: Getafe 1-1 Espanyol
Getafe are perhaps the more likely victors here with home advantage but they’ve struggled for consistency this term. Espanyol have been consistent only in the sense that they keep drawing matches and they can take confidence from having collected a point from each of their last two away games – tough trips to Atletico Madrid and Barcelona. A repeat would be no surprise here.
