It’s derby day in Asturias this weekend as Real Oviedo and Sporting Gijon face off at the Carlos Tartiere. Both sides were tipped for play-off pushes this season but both have a lot of work to do as we reach the midway point in the campaign with this round of fixtures.

Indeed Real Oviedo need to be careful that they don’t get sucked into a relegation battle. They are 16th currently, 6 points above the bottom four and 8 off the play-offs. There is still time for them to climb the table and push for the top six and there have been some more positives for Oviedo followers in recent weeks.

Recently appointed Alvaro Cervera has set about making them tough to break down and he has largely accomplished that mission. Oviedo have conceded just twice in their last 6 league outings, winning 3 and losing 1. However that solitary defeat did come last time out at Ipurua which does slightly dent the momentum they were starting to build heading into this game.

As for Sporting, they are in the habit of drawing matches and it’s equally unclear what kind of direction their season is going to ultimately head in. Abelardo’s side picked up a much needed win in their last away game, a 1-0 success at Lugo. However they failed to build on that last time out with a goalless home clash against Cartagena an equally underwhelming way to head into the big derby.

5 of their last 7 Segunda Division fixtures have finished level and they don’t exactly have great recent memories of clashes with their fiercest rivals. It’s just 1 goal in 6 derbies for Sporting, with 4 of the last 5 resulting in 1-0 Oviedo wins. Uros Durdevic did at least net a late leveller on this ground last season but you have to go all the way back to 2001 for Sporting’s last league victory at the Carlos Tartiere.

Score Prediction: Real Oviedo 1-0 Sporting Gijon

Real Oviedo’s last 4 home games have produced just 3 goals in total (all scored by Oviedo in 1-0 wins) which suggests this may be another very tight Asturian derby with few chances. The H2H of this derby also favours Real Oviedo in recent times and Alvaro Cervera’s side may just have the edge here, although don’t expect this to be a classic.
