Real Sociedad vs Valencia Preview

Real Sociedad and Valencia clash in one of the standout fixtures this weekend in LaLiga. Both sides can be pretty pleased with their efforts so far this term, although recent results suggest that the World Cup break may come at a good time for both.
That’s certainly true of Real Sociedad who are at the end of a really busy period that has seen their injury-ravaged squad have to play two games per week ever since the last international break. Their attacking options should be bolstered by the return of Mikel Oyarzabal and Mohamed Ali-Cho in January and the World Cup will give most of their players a chance to rest and recover.
Following an 8 game winning streak in all competitions between mid September and mid October, La Real have lost 3 of their last 4 games including their last 2 league matches. They failed to score in either the defeat at Real Valladolid or home game with Betis which does point to their attacking options being really stretched right now with David Silva and Take Kubo also now sidelined. In the circumstances, they did well to only lose 1-0 against Manchester United on Thursday night, a result which ensured they topped their Europa League group and advanced to the last 16 of that competition.
Valencia don’t have any European distractions but they are hoping that’s not the case next season. It still feels like it might be a step too far for this team to qualify for Europe this season and their form has tailed off in recent weeks after a really bright start under new boss Gennaro Gattuso.
They’ve gone 4 without a win in LaLiga and their performance levels have also dropped. They struggled to create anything notable against an out of sorts Barcelona side last weekend but still nearly claimed a point with Robert Lewandowski’s Stoppage Time goal the only difference between the teams at Mestalla. This game and their midweek clash with Betis, will provide a good barometer as to where they stand in relation to the other likely contenders for European qualification this season.

Real Sociedad are struggling for goals currently and fatigue may also be really starting to set in for some players with rotation options limited in some positions. Valencia should be fresher and ought to be able to name a stronger side this week than they did against Barcelona last time out with the likes of Yunus Musah available again. The visitors look capable of getting a result.
