Valencia vs Mallorca Preview

Valencia fan protest

Valencia and Mallorca face off at Mestalla this Saturday. The hosts are hoping to extend a 5 game unbeaten streak while the visitors are bidding to bounce from a midweek defeat in Donostia.

After a few relatively uninspiring years, Valencia are suddenly a good watch again and if nothing else, the raw passion of Gennaro Gattuso on the sidelines makes their games worth tuning in for. There is much more than that of course and at times this season their football has been excellent too and it’ll be interesting to see just how quickly this relatively young side can develop.

We saw a slightly different performance from Valencia in midweek as their recent possession-based approach was shunned in favour of something slightly more resilient in their 1-1 draw at Sevilla. Having led the game for 80 minutes after Edinson Cavani’s early strike, there was still frustration that they couldn’t see the game out though and that was on the back of a disappointing home draw against bottom club Elche where they also let a lead slip.

We’ll see Valencia back to trying to dominate the game from the offset here against a well organised Mallorca side. Javier Aguirre’s men have already played most of the top sides but they’ve not conceded more than once in any of their last five games, a sequence which has seen them play the likes of Barcelona, Real Sociedad and Sevilla.

They can welcome Vedat Muriqi back from a two game ban here which should make a difference to their attacking output in this match. However overall, Aguirre would have been quite pleased with what he saw from his side in the 1-0 defeat away to La Real in midweek with Mallorca competitive throughout against their high-flying opponents.

Score Prediction: Valencia 1-1 Mallorca

Valencia have caught the eye this season with how they’ve played but they don’t seem to have developed that killer instinct that allows them to win tight games and there have been times when they haven’t made their dominance count. With Mallorca defending well and making life tough for some of the stronger teams, Los Che could be left frustrated again here.
