Rayo Vallecano and Cadiz clash in the opening game of matchday 11 in LaLiga 2022/23. We are getting nearer to the World Cup break now and both sides will see this as at least an opportunity to pick up an important three points.
With home advantage, Rayo will be the favourites and they’ll be pretty content with how their season is panning out so far. Mid-table would be a very good outcome this term for the Madrid club who were among the favourites for relegation having struggled in the second half of last season after an electric start, particularly in Vallecas.
However Andoni Iraola has furthered his reputation as one of Spain’s brightest young coaches with some assured tactical displays and good results. Rayo have already gone to both Barcelona and Atletico Madrid and left with a point, with Falcao’s late penalty earning them a draw in midweek against Diego Simeone’s side. They could go 8 points clear of their opponents with victory here and they’d already have a healthy cushion on the relegation scrap.
Cadiz travel to the capital having gone 5 matches without defeat in a significant turnaround in their fortunes after they started the season with 5 losses. Their most recent 4 games have all been drawn though so they do remain in the bottom 3 and in a real relegation fight although Sergio looks to have done enough to ensure he remains in charge until at least after the World Cup.
Defensively, they’ve been much improved with just 3 goals conceded in their last 5 matches. It’s rarely pretty but they did give quite a strong account of themselves at home to high-flying Betis in midweek, in a game that ended goalless. There was some bad news though with full-back Joseba Zaldúa suffering what could be a season-ending ACL injury.
