Sevilla vs Valencia Preview

Sevilla stadium

Sevilla and Valencia meet in one of the standout fixtures on matchday ten. It’s a game which should give us a better indicator of the level of each of these teams with Sevilla trying to find their feet under Jorge Sampaoli while Valencia will be looking to make a statement here as they bid to push for European football this season.

Sevilla’s struggles look set to make the battle for European qualification a whole lot more interesting this term. The Andalusians already have ground to make up on all of their most likely rivals but a 1-0 victory at the weekend at Mallorca did at least push them up the table and they would climb into the top half for a few hours at least with victory here.

Nobody at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan is getting carried away. Despite a slight improvement and three unbeaten games since Sampaoli took charge, they haven’t exactly set the world on fire. They only had 4 attempts on goal in the Mallorca match at the weekend and it’s still far from clear what their best eleven is with doubts right across the pitch.

Valencia are also a work in progress to some extent under Gennaro Gattuso but there have been plenty of positive signs. They are sitting pretty in 7th currently but will feel as though they let two points slip at the weekend. Los Che created 3.04 xG compared to Elche 1.30, most of which was accounted for by Pere Milla’s penalty. However they failed to make their dominance pay with the game ending 2-2 at Mestalla.

That was the fourth game in a row in which Valencia have scored twice or more which is certainly a very encouraging sign. Edinson Cavani bagged both goals against Elche but like his opposite number, Gattuso may well rotate in midfield and attack here to bring some fresh legs in for this game.

Score Prediction: Sevilla 2-2 Valencia

It’s a measure of how far Sevilla have fallen, as well as improvements in Valencia, that it’s really hard to call how this game will go. There have been tentative signs that Sevilla are producing more under Sampaoli but they’ve not fully convinced and Los Che look capable of leaving with a point.
