Atletico Madrid vs Rayo Vallecano Preview

Civitas Metropolitano

There’s a Madrid derby this Tuesday in LaLiga as Atletico Madrid entertain Rayo Vallecano at the Metropolitano. Atleti picked up an important win at the weekend and will fancy their chances of putting three more points on the board here.

It wasn’t convincing from Diego Simeone’s side in Bilbao with just three attempts on goal, although they did also have an early goal ruled out in the 1-0 win which came courtesy of Antoine Griezmenn’s strike early in the Second Half. Atleti had to survive a late storm though with the home team exerting heavy pressure late in the game.

In some respects, their return of 19 points from 9 games so far this season is a fairly decent one given they don’t really seem to have found their stride yet at all. They could go level on points with Barcelona with a win here and they are by no means out of contention in their Champions League group despite a series of poor results.

Simeone will be hoping for one big push in the next few weeks to ensure they still have everything to fight for when we return from the World Cup. However he will also be aware that he needs to find fresh solutions across the pitch with this team yet to convince.

It’ll be interesting to see how Rayo Vallecano approach this game. Andoni Iraola will surely have one eye on their weekend home game against Cadiz which in many respects is much more important as they look to build a clear advantage on the bottom three. Rayo don’t have the deepest of squads though with options for rotation limited in a number of positions.

They were also up against local rivals last time out and had the better of their game against Getafe with 17 attempts and a 66% share of possession. However they couldn’t find a breakthrough in a match that ended 0-0. It’s the kind of game you feel they may have won had Raul De Tomas been available with the striker only eligible to play from January onwards following his move from Espanyol.

Score Prediction: Atletico Madrid 2-0 Rayo Vallecano

Rayo may look to make a few changes here but they don’t really have a squad that is well set up for playing twice in one week, as their best XI largely picks itself. Clearly they will be underdogs in this game and Atletico Madrid ought to be able exert their dominance and win it with a bit of breathing space.
