Sevilla vs Atletico Madrid Preview

This is the standout game this weekend and one that fans of both sides and plenty of neutrals will be keenly watching. That’s not necessarily because it will be a classic, but more because the losing side will really be staring down the barrel of a miserable start to the campaign.
Sevilla have bigger problems with their current 15th place probably a reasonably fair reflection of their level so far this season. They haven’t been anywhere near their usual standards with defensive problems ongoing and in truth they were fortunate to scrape a draw away to Villarreal last time out.
That result did at least make it three games unbeaten in all competitions, all of which were away from home, a sequence of results which may just have kept Julen Lopetegui in a job. The next three matches are all at home and if results don’t go well over the next week, we can expect the Sanchez-Pizjuan to become an increasingly toxic place. It is though interesting to listen out for just where that anger is being directed as the coach is not the only man in the firing line right with much broader doubts about the way the club is being run also evident.
As for Atletico Madrid, it’s not exactly a crisis yet. Diego Simeone is nearly 11 years into the job and has navigated his way through several rough patches during his tenure but this does feel different in terms of just how early on Atleti’s title hopes already feel as good as over. A 2-1 defeat in the Madrid derby last time out, left them 8 points off the top and with Real Madrid and Barcelona looking strong, it’s hard to view them as serious contenders now.
There are questions across the pitch for Simeone to address. The back three was exposed again by Los Blancos and the midfield feels unbalanced still. Up front, Alvaro Morata and Joao Felix haven’t really kicked on from a very encouraging showing on the opening weekend against Getafe.

Score Prediction: Sevilla 1-1 Atletico Madrid
With neither side looking too convincing right now, a draw feels like the most likely outcome here unless one coach can spring a tactical surprise that works or one individual produces a moment of quality. Sevilla’s defensive issues suggest Atleti may be the team more likely to edge it but they’ve not been anywhere near their best since that opening game and may settle for a draw heading into an important European game in midweek.
