Valencia vs Celta Vigo Preview

Valencia fan protest

In some ways, this is one of the most interesting fixtures this weekend between two teams who lost important players but also recruited heavily this summer. Both sides are evolving and trying to integrate some young players into their teams and it’ll be a good test of both side’s level right now with Valencia and Celta likely mid-table candidates this term.

Valencia fans always hope for more than that but are all too aware of the limitations which they are operating under. They didn’t even show up for this fixture on the final weekend last season in protest at the owners but they were loud and noisy in their last home game, a 5-1 win over Getafe. They rightly attracted plenty of plaudits for their performance that night but failed to build on it last weekend in Vallecas.

An own goal from Barcelona loanee Nico Gonzalez contributed to a 2-1 defeat and it was a bit of a reality check after the highs of the previous game. It’ll be interesting to see whether Gennaro Gattuso makes any changes here. Summer additions André Almeida and Justin Kluivert will both be expecting to have a big role to play this season but were only on the bench last weekend while Edinson Cavani is training now and hoping to make his debut here.

It’s a somewhat similar story for Celta in that they’ve been quite inconsistent so far. They’ve conceded four against each of the two big Madrid clubs including a defeat at the Metropolitano last weekend, although the 4-1 scoreline certainly flattered Atletico. The Galicians have played some really good football of their own though, particularly in the recent 3-0 home win over Cadiz.

Big money signing Jørgen Strand Larsen made his first start last weekend after his switch from Groningen. Celta will be hoping the 22 year old can form a strong partnership with Iago Aspas at the head of Chacho Coudet’s favoured 4-1-3-2 formation. They are a team with several goal threats though with the likes of Oscar Rodriguez and Carles Perez capable of chipping in with a few.

Score Prediction: Valencia 2-2 Celta Vigo

This could be a good game. Both sides will look to play and take the game to one another and we should see chances at both ends. Right now, it’s hard to say who is stronger. There are positives for supporters of both teams to cling to but there are also some flaws and a score draw could be the outcome of this one.
