Cadiz vs Athletic Club Preview

Monday’s action in LaLiga starts in Andalusia where Cadiz are looking for their first points of the season. Every other team has picked up at least one point so far and Sergio will be desperate to see his side break their duck here against Ernesto Valverde’s Athletic.

In some ways, Cadiz have benefited from this game being on a Monday rather than a Friday or Saturday. They’ve been dealing with extensive injury problems at the start of the season but will hopefully have a few players back here following defeat at El Sadar last time out. They’ve also done a bit of transfer business since then as they look to bolster their options with Théo Bongonda’s arrival on loan, a much needed addition in the wide areas where they’ve looked very light.

They could do with adding a bit more quality before the window closes with a relegation scrap most likely ahead. Cadiz haven’t scored yet this term and they don’t have particularly happy memories of this fixture given they were 3 down by Half-Time when Athletic visited in April, although Sergio’s men did fight back to almost salvage a draw on that night.

While Athletic do have a different coach now, the playing personnel hasn’t changed much since then. Indeed their only major summer signing was only confirmed this weekend with Ander Herrera returning on loan from PSG, eight years after his initial departure. He will bring a touch of quality in midfield and does feel like an upgrade on most of their current central options, even if his best years are now behind him.

It has been a reasonable start for Valverde third time around in Bilbao. Athletic’s opening two fixtures were both at home and both saw the Basques keep clean sheets with a goalless draw against Mallorca followed by a 1-0 win over Valencia. Alex Berenguer’s strike was enough to see off Los Che last time out but questions remain as to how much of an attacking threat Athletic will carry this term.

Score Prediction: Cadiz 0-0 Athletic Club

Cadiz should be able to name a stronger eleven here than in their opening two games and it’ll be interesting to see how both coaches approach this. With just one goal scored between them so far this term, it doesn’t exactly have the makings of a classic. Athletic look the more likely victors but Cadiz may just be able to dig in deep and grind out their first point of the season.
