Valencia vs Girona Preview

Valencia fan protest

On Sunday Valencia host newly promoted Girona in the Estadio De Mestalla. Both teams will want to get off to a good start and hit the ground running.

It is always a drama these days with Valencia with endless coaches and players coming in and out and regular arguments behind the scenes. It looked like things were settling down last season. The team reached the Copa Del Rey final and Head Coach José Bordalás had done a fairly decent job finishing 9th but it all unravelled at the end with the former Getafe boss leaving after just one season.

Valencia start this campaign with a new Head Coach in the shape of Gennaro Gattuso. The Italian will be hoping that he is given time to work and build a squad that will challenge for the European places. This plan has started well with winger Samu Castillejo coming in from AC Milan and Brazilian winger Samuel Lino coming in on loan from Atletico Madrid. Losing Gonçalo Guedes will be a blow for Los Che but they were expecting to lose some players to help balance the books and Gattuso will hope there is still money left to bring in maybe one or two more new faces to strengthen the squad.

Third time lucky it was in the play-offs for Girona and they are finally back in the LaLiga Santander. Led by the charismatic coach Míchel and owned and backed by the City Grou, the Gironistes will be aiming to make themselves a home here in the top flight. Girona have been busy with their transfers bringing in forward Taty Castellanos on loan from New York City. Returning once again on loan from Manchester City is the exciting Brazilian right back Yan Couto who had a great season for Girona in the 2020/21 season. Also coming in on loan is Yangel Herrera from City and Rodrigo Riquelme, a young winger from Atletico Madrid who looks a hot prospect and will be hoping to flourish here.

Defender David Lopez has arrived after leaving Espanyol and he will bring great organisation to the Girona defence. Coming in from Real Madrid is left back Miguel Gutiérrez who has been highly touted and another prospect for the future. Looking at this game, if star striker Cristhian Stuani is firing on all cylinders there is a good chance Girona can get something out of it.

Possible Lineups

Valencia: Mamardashvili – Vazquez, Diakhaby, Paulista, Correia – Lino, Musah, Guillamon, Castillejo – Soler – Duro (4-4-1-1)

Girona: Juan Carlos – Juanpe, Espinosa, David Lopez – Gutierrez, Aleix Garcia, Herrera, Riquelme, Arnau Martinez – Stuani, Castellanos (3-5-2)

Score Prediction: Valencia 1-1 Girona

In what will probably be a cagey affair, both teams will have their moments. It is what they do in those moments that will reflect on the scoreline but Girona stand a good chance of making a bright start on their return to the top flight by taking a point.
