Cadiz vs Granada Preview

There’s an Andalusian derby on Monday night to round off the matchday 17 action in LaLiga. It’s a big game at the bottom too with both Cadiz and Granada involved in a real scrap for survival this season.

These are certainly worrying times for Cadiz supporters. Alvaro Cervera has done a wonderful job at this club but it’s getting increasingly difficult to see just what their path to safety this season may look like. They are yet to record a home victory and come into this game following three straight defeats in LaLiga, with 3+ goals conceded on each occasion. While their 4-1 loss to Atletico Madrid can be tolerated to some extent, a 4-0 defeat at Getafe and 3-1 loss at Elche last time out are far more worrying.

The results took their goals conceded tally to 30, the worst record in LaLiga this term. It’s not as though they’ve exactly been prolific at the other end either with just 14 goals scored in 16 matches so far. It’s fair to say that they are crying out for some January reinforcements and their future at this level may depend on some smart acquisitions or more likely loan signings at both ends of the pitch.

Granada could also perhaps do with some fresh blood but on paper at least, there is more top flight quality in their ranks. It took a while for that to shine this season, but gradually things have improved and they’ve started to play with a clearer identity under Robert Moreno. They come into this game following a 2-1 win over fellow strugglers Alaves with Santiago Arias on target late on and a repeat success here over another likely relegation rival would be a huge boost.

That would give Granada a six point cushion on Cadiz with a game in hand and they’d be in a position to climb towards mid-table if they could keep this decent run going. They’ve avoided defeat in 3 of their last 4 away league games with the most recent being a 2-2 draw at San Mames against Athletic.

Head to Head

  • Last 6 Competitive Meetings: 2 Cadiz Wins, 1 Granada Win, 3 Draws.
  • Cadiz are unbeaten in their last 4 games against Granada.
  • The most recent was a 1-0 at Los Carmenes in May.
  • Granada haven’t won in Cadiz since a 3-2 win in the Segunda B in 2009.

Team News

Tomás Alarcón, Jose Mari and Jon Ander Garrido are out for the hosts. Salvi Sanchez and Fali are doubts.

Darwin Machís and Neyder Lozano are missing for the away team. Rubén Rochina, Domingos Duarte and German Sanchez are carrying knocks and will be assessed.

Possible Lineups

Cadiz vs Granada Predictions

Score Prediction: Cadiz 1-2 Granada*

Granada look the team with a bit more quality and have more in the way of goal threats. The return to fitness of Luis Milla also gives them a bit of extra class in midfield which could be decisive in a game like this against a Cadiz side that doesn’t have a lot in the way of creativity and largely relies on their pace on the break. The visitors might nick an important win.

*Previous published prediction of Cadiz 2-1 Granada was a typo as you would probably have realised by reading the paragraph below. Apologies!
