Mallorca vs Celta Vigo Preview
Mallorca and Celta Vigo face off in the first game of LaLiga matchday 17 on Friday night in Palma. It’s probably still too early to make real judgements on the kinds of seasons these two clubs will end up having with both blowing hot and cold to some extent so far.
Just when Mallorca looked as though they might be just slipping down the table into an inevitable relegation battle, they went and surprised everybody by winning at the Wanda Metropolitano last weekend. Late goals from Franco Russo and Take Kubo sealed a memorable comeback win for the Balearic Island side and it was a much needed confidence boost.
Mallorca had gone 7 league games without a win prior to that and while they had remained competitive throughout that period, you did start to fear a bit for Luis Garcia’s side. They may still end up in and around the relegation battle but they are showing just enough flashes of quality to suggest they may have enough to stay in this league.
Celta Vigo should certainly have enough but their current return of 16 points from 16 games is more or less in line with what might be typically classed as relegation form. Truth be told, a point per game is likely to be enough this season with Celta currently 4 points above the drop-zone but they had far loftier ambitions this term having finished 8th in 2020/21.
The Galician side’s chances here aren’t helped by the absence of Iago Aspas. He picked up an injury whilst scoring against Valencia last week and then craftily took his shirt off whilst celebrating to trigger a suspension which would also have ruled him out here. Celta went on to lose that game 2-1 and they desperately need somebody to stand up here and try to lead this team in the absence of their talismanic forward.
Head to Head
- Last 6 Competitive Meetings: 3 Mallorca Wins, 3 Draws.
- Mallorca won this fixture 5-1 when they were last in the top flight (2019/20).
- Celta haven’t beaten Mallorca since a 2-0 home win in 2006.
- They’ve lost on 3 of their last 4 league visits to Palma.
Antonio Raillo and Matthew Hoppe are both out injured for Mallorca. Salva Sevilla is a doubt.
Iago Aspas is banned and injured. Augusto Solari is also a definite absentee for Celta.
Mallorca vs Celta Vigo Predictions
Score Prediction: Mallorca 2-1 Celta Vigo
Mallorca look capable of getting the victory here. While at times they looked to have moved on slightly from their over-dependence on Iago Aspas last season, he’s still a massive miss for Celta and they aren’t looking that convincing right now so Mallorca have a good chance to build on a memorable win last weekend.
