There are just six rounds of fixtures remaining in LaLiga SmartBank and Mallorca are well placed to secure an immediate return to the top flight. That’s despite a real downturn in form of late and they’ll be determined to get back on track with three points here against mid-table Mirandes.
Mallorca are currently 2nd heading into the weekend, 6 points behind leaders Espanyol but significantly 6 clear of Almeria in 3rd. The Andalusian side have completely failed to make Mallorca pay for some poor recent results. They come into this match following successive 1-0 defeats, both away from home against lowly sides in the shape of Castellon and Sabadell, both of whom were playing Segunda B football this time last year.
At Son Moix though, Mallorca have largely still been doing the business and winning enough games to keep them on course for automatic promotion. They’ve seen off Leganes and Lugo in their last two home games and haven’t conceded in any of their last 3 home games. It’s that defensive quality which has been key in their success this season with Luis Garcia’s side having conceded just 23 goals – the joint best record in this league.
Mirandes have also been good at the back, conceding less than a goal per game on average. However they’ve been nowhere near as convincing at the other end of the pitch, also scoring less than a goal per game. That has been good enough to maintain a safe mid-table position and there’s no danger of them going down but it will take something of a miracle if they are to close the 8 point deficit to Rayo Vallecano who are currently in the final play-off place.
While we may have said the same about Elche around this stage last season, Mirandes just don’t seem to have the kind of firepower required to push them any higher than their current mid-table standing. This match completes a tough run of fixtures with Mirandes having also faced four top six sides within their last eight games. Away wins at Sporting Gijon and Rayo Vallecano during that period, suggest they are more than capable of making a game of this.
