Inter Milan vs Real Madrid Preview

Inter Milan vs Real Madrid Match Preview & Prediction

There’s a clash between two European heavyweights at the San Siro this Wednesday in the Champions League and it’s also a very important game in terms of the race for progress from a very competitive Group B. There is real pressure on the hosts to claim their first win of the campaign while defeat for Real Madrid would see them drop to the bottom position in the group.

Having both made slow starts, the first meeting between the clubs in the Spanish capital also felt huge and Real Madrid ended up claiming a vital victory. Having led 2-0 at one point, Los Blancos were pegged back to 2-2 but ultimately claimed maximum points thanks to Rodrygo’s late goal.

Real Madrid have not exactly convinced since then though. They went down 4-1 at Valencia a few days later and only had one attempt on target in a LaLiga draw at Villarreal at the weekend. Like many top sides, injuries and positive COVID-19 tests are starting to take their toll and it may just be a case of trying to make it through to the new year still being in the hunt for all the major prizes.

It hasn’t been a great start to the 2020/21 season for Inter Milan either. Antonio Conte’s men went all the way to the Europa League Final in August leading to a much shortened summer break and they haven’t hit the ground running. A failure to win any of their opening three group games leaves them under real pressure to beat Madrid here and they haven’t fully convinced in Serie A either, sitting down in 5th place currently despite a 4-2 win over Torino at the weekend.

Head to Head

  • Inter were 3-2 winners when the sides met at the Estadio Di Stefano three weeks ago.
  • The sides had met 15 times prior to that in European competition.
  • Both teams now have 7 wins against one another.
  • The sides hadn’t met in the Champions League since way back in the 1998/99 group stage prior to this season.

Team News

Romelu Lukaku, who missed the first match, is available here and the Belgian was in inspired form at the weekend. Marcelo Brozovic and Aleksandar Kolarov are doubts having recently tested positive for COVID-19.

Casemiro is expected to play having now produced a negative test for COVID-19. Karim Benzema is also set to be fit for this one but Federico Valverde and Sergio Ramos are both out injured.

Predicted Inter Milan Starting Lineup:

Handanovic – Bastoni, De Vrij, D’Ambrosio – Young, Vidal, Gagliardini, Barella, Hakimi – Lukaku, Martinez (3-5-2)

Predicted Real Madrid Starting Lineup:

Courtois – Mendy, Nacho, Varane, Carvajal – Kroos, Casemiro – Hazard, Odegaard, Vinicius – Benzema (4-2-3-1)

Inter Milan vs Real Madrid Predictions

Score Prediction: Inter 1-1 Real Madrid

The expected availability of Casemiro is a real boost for Real Madrid on the eve of this game and they really do need him on a night such as this. Los Blancos haven’t been playing well but they’ve largely been grinding out results on their travels when they’ve needed them having avoided defeat away to the likes of Barcelona, Villarreal and Borussia Monchengladbach over the past month. They should be capable of doing the same here to keep them just about on track for a place in the knockout rounds.
