Real Sociedad vs Granada Preview

Real Sociedad vs Granada preview

Two of the stories of the season so far meet in LaLiga on Sunday. Both Real Sociedad and Granada have built on European qualification last term by making strong starts to the 2020/21 campaigns. While they play a very different brand of football, La Real and Granada are both looking strong and are coping admirably with the demands of a busy fixture list.

Real Sociedad have done that largely by putting their faith in academy graduates to supplement what was already a pretty strong first XI. They head into this weekend on top of LaLiga and having claimed an important 1-0 over AZ in the Europa League on Thursday.

They had 28 attempts in that game and have been creating loads of chances this season. They could have been more clinical against the Dutch side but that hasn’t been a problem in LaLiga of late. They’ve won all of their last four matches by three goal margins with Mikel Oyarzabal and Portu delivering plenty of goals from out wide.

Granada have achieved most of their success under Diego Martinez thanks to their prowess at the other end of the pitch. However they do appear to have added a bit more quality in the final third and there was a welcome goal for big money signing Luis Suarez in the Europa League on Thursday.

The former Zaragoza man could go on to be a very important player for Granada this season and there is genuine quality in their midfield too with Yangel Herrera and Luis Milla both having impressive campaigns to date.

Head to Head

  • Last 6 Competitive Meetings: 5 Real Sociedad Wins, 1 Granada Win.
  • Granada were 3-2 winners at Anoeta when the sides last met in July.
  • However La Real had won all of the previous 5 meetings.
  • Granada have only won 2 of the last 12 meetings overall in LaLiga.

Team News

Joseba Zaldua is fit again for La Real and should start at right-back with Andoni Gorosabel carrying a knock. Igor Zubeldia remains out.

Jesus Vallejo, Roberto Soldado and Antonio Puertas have all recently tested positive for COVID-19 and are unlikely to be available for Granada.

Predicted Real Sociedad Starting Lineup:

Remiro – Munoz, Le Normand, Elustondo, Zaldua – Merino, Zubimendi, Silva – Oyarzabal, Jose, Portu (4-3-3)

Predicted Granada Starting Lineup:

Silva – Neva, Duarte, Sanchez, Foulquier – Milla, Montoro – Machis, Herrera, Kenedy – Molina (4-2-3-1)

Real Sociedad vs Granada Predictions

Score Prediction: Real Sociedad 2-1 Granada

This will be a tougher test for Real Sociedad than their recent league games. Granada are never easy opponents but they did name a strong side in Cyprus on Thursday and it’ll be tough for them to go again with as much intensity following plenty of travelling and against a team that will most likely dominate possession. La Real could edge this to ensure they top LaLiga heading into the international break.
