Levante vs Alaves Preview

Levante vs Alaves preview

There’s a significant game at the bottom end of LaLiga as Levante host Alaves on Sunday. Levante need a win to really kick-start their season and they are boosted by finally being able to play at their own stadium for the first time in eight months with the roof now fully in place at the new-look Ciutat de Valencia which is fit for football at last.

Their last game on this ground was a 1-1 draw with Granada on March 8th, just before Spain went into lockdown. Levante have only played two home fixtures so far this season – both at Villarreal’s Estadio Ceramica and that in part explains why they are struggling in the relegation zone.

On paper, they have enough quality to avoid a relegation battle but they do need to start putting some points on the board having only won once so far this term. Worryingly for Paco Lopez’s often free-scoring team, even the goals have dried up with just 2 in their last 5 outings.

As for Alaves, things are looking a bit brighter than they were a few weeks ago. They’ve managed to record 7 points from their last 4 matches including a very hard-fought draw against Barcelona last weekend. Pablo Machin was left raging when Jota saw red with his side 1-0 up with half an hour to play. Antoine Griezmann almost immediately equalised for Barcelona but Machin would have been delighted with how his team dug in after that.

While it does look as though Alaves are going to be lingering towards the bottom of LaLiga this season, there are now more reasons to be positive for fans of the Basque club than were evident in their opening few fixtures.

Head to Head

  • Last 6 Competitive Meetings: 5 Alaves Wins, 1 Levante Wins.
  • Alaves have won each of the last 3 meetings to nil.
  • They won both meetings last season by slender 1-0 margins – key results in their ultimate survival.
  • Levante’s last victory over Alaves came in the form of a 2-1 win in September 2018.

Team News

Key man Jose Campana has been passed fit for Levante but they are missing Jorge Miramon to a back injury.

Jota is banned for Alaves while Ximo Navarro and Pere Pons are both out injured.

Predicted Levante Starting Lineup:

Aitor F’dez – Clerc, Postigo, Vezo, Son – Bardhi, Malsa, Campana, Rochina – Morales, Marti (4-4-2)

Predicted Alaves Starting Lineup:

Pacheco – Duarte, Lejeune, Laguardia, Martin – Rioja, Battaglia, Pina, Edgar – Joselu, Lucas Perez (4-4-2)

Levante vs Alaves Predictions

Score Prediction: Levante 2-0 Alaves

While there will be no fans, Levante should still get something of a lift from finally being able to play on their own ground. They have a little bit more quality in midfield than Alaves and if they can successfully negate the aerial threat of Joselu, Levante will fancy they can claim just their second win of the new season here.
