There’s an early game in the Segunda Division on Thursday with high-flying Sporting Gijon travelling to Madrid to take on Alcorcon. The hosts have had their start to the season thrown into chaos by a COVID outbreak amongst their playing and coaching staff with two matches postponed but they returned to action unsuccessfully on Monday night.
In their first game in 16 days, Alcorcon were beaten 2-0 at home by Mallorca on Monday. Three days later they are back in action and they will have a busy schedule ahead as they look to make up those missed games. There’s only one side below Alcorcon in the Segunda table heading into this match so there is pressure on them to start picking up a few results.
Their recent displays have not been good. It’s four straight defeats to nil for the South Madrid outfit and they’ve only managed to find the net in one match so far this term – their solitary victory over Tenerife on matchday 2.
As for Sporting Gijon, things are looking much brighter. The Asturians are sitting pretty in 2nd place and are the only team in the top four who wasn’t relegated from the top flight last season. It’s going to be a really tough battle if they are going to seal automatic promotion when they are competing with the likes of Espanyol, Leganes and Mallorca who are all boosted by the Spanish equivalent of parachute payments which have enabled them to assemble squads that on paper have more quality than that of Sporting.
However David Gallego’s side look like an organised outfit with a solid defence and they bounced back from a slight wobble with a 2-1 win over Ponferradina at the weekend.
