Cadiz vs Sevilla Preview

The first LaLiga matchday of 2022 concludes with an Andalusian derby in Cadiz. The hopes of Sevilla challenging for this title were bolstered this weekend by leaders Real Madrid losing and Julen Lopetegui’s side will be just 2 points behind Los Blancos if they can win their two games in hand.
Cadiz will be determined to make sure that isn’t the case and they won’t be lacking motivation here with local pride at stake, not to mention their future at this level with the hosts clearly in a relegation battle. Truth be told, it’s not one you can see Cadiz winning unless there are some significant changes in the upcoming months and they are certainly one team that could really do with trying to find a bit of quality in the January transfer window.
They have issues at both ends of the pitch that need addressing though. Cadiz have both the second worst goalscoring record and second worst defensive record in the Spanish top flight. Only winless Levante are below them in the table and they are yet to record a home victory with the Nuevo Mirandilla anything but a fortress for Alvaro Cervera’s side at the moment.
Sevilla will certainly fancy their chances of coming here and picking up all the points. They’ve collected 10 from their last 4 outings but would still have been grateful that the break came when it did. Fatigue was clearly a factor by the end of their last game, a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Barcelona not made easier by Jules Kounde’s 64th minute sending off.
They have been struggling with one or two selection issues of late and that’s set to continue here with Kounde’s suspension and five positive Covid cases in their squad but their opponents are also very short on numbers so Sevilla’s extra squad depth could still play a role in determining the outcome of this one.
Head to Head
- Last 6 Competitive Meetings: 5 Sevilla Wins, 1 Draw.
- Sevilla have won on their last 3 visits to Cadiz.
- They recorded 3-0 and 3-1 wins over their Andalusian rivals last season.
- Cadiz last beat Sevilla with a 3-2 home win in the Copa del Rey in 2006.
Team News
Juan Cala is banned for Cadiz. They also have reported eight positive covid tests with the likes of Anthony Lozano and Salvi Sanchez among those affected.
Youssef En-Nesyri, Diego Carlos and Karim Rekik are among those known to have tested positive at Sevilla. Suso and Erik Lamela are injured while Jules Kounde is suspended.
Cadiz vs Sevilla Predictions
Score Prediction: Cadiz 0-2 Sevilla
Sevilla are expected to be missing both Diego Carlos and Jules Kounde which immediately gives Cadiz a greater chance than they might have had in this game. However the hosts are really struggling for options in attack due to Covid-19 cases and may struggle to exploit that and you’d fancy Sevilla’s extra quality to be telling over 90 minutes.
