Real Madrid vs Athletic Club Preview

The Santiago Bernabeu hosts Real Madrid’s final match of the season as Los Blancos take on Athletic. The home side will be looking to give a positive send off to several of their players whilst Athletic will aim to keep their slim hopes of achieving a European spot alive.
Real Madrid’s last outing came was a 2-1 victory against Sevilla. Rodrygo Goes scored two excellent goals in each half to wrap up the points for Carlo Ancelotti’s side.
Sunday’s match will be the end to what has been a mixed season for Real Madrid. The side may have won their first Copa Del Rey title since 2014, however they failed to keep up in the title race and although they got as far as the semi finals in the Champions League, that competition also ended in disappointment with a 4-0 loss to Manchester City.
Although this match against Athletic does not have much on the line, it may allow the club to send many of their players off with a victory. Marco Asensio, Mariano Diaz, Dani Ceballos and Nacho Fernandez seem destined to leave the club, whilst captain Karim Benzema is also set to bring his 14 year career at the Santiago Bernabeu to an end.
Athletic come this match after losing 1-0 at home to already relegated Elche at San Mames last weekend. The Basque side dominated the entire match, however were punished for missing their chances as Lucas Boye scored in added time to take the points away from Athletic.
This loss would make a big dent in Athletic’s race for the Conference League spot, as now the Basque side sit in eighth, level on points with Osasuna and with a further three teams who could also still grab 7th place on the final weekend.
Failing to achieve top seven would come as a disappointment for Athletic given that Ernesto Valverde’s return was taken as a step in the right direction for the club, yet currently they sit in the same position as they did at the end of last season and with less points.

Score Prediction: Real Madrid 2-0 Athletic Club
Real Madrid should have enough to wrap up their season in style and give their departing players a fine send off. Athletic do have something to play for, however their record away at Real Madrid has been poor in recent seasons, and many other results would also have to go in their favour in order for them to achieve a European place.
