Granada vs Leganes Preview

It’s the final weekend in the Spanish Segunda Division and it promises to be a celebratory evening at Los Carmenes, or at least that’s the idea. Granada are top of the table with a one point advantage on 2nd placed Las Palmas and two point lead on 3rd placed Alaves heading into the final games. What’s more, their two closest rivals meet each other, so it’s 4th placed Levante (3 points behind Granada but with the H2H advantage) who are the biggest threat to Granada’s chances of promotion.
A point will be enough here to guarantee a return to the big time, but Granada fans won’t be taking anything for granted, not least after the painful experience of the final day of last season, when they were relegated from the Primera despite going into their last game, which was also at Los Carmenes, as strong favourites to survive. This represents a chance to banish the ghosts of Jorge Molina’s decisive missed penalty in that game against Espanyol.
Like many of the teams at the top, Granada have stuttered as the season has neared the end. They’d won just 1 of 6 matches, heading into matchday 40 but back-to-back wins over Lugo and Mirandes have put them firmly in pole position once more. They can also take confidence from an outstanding home record. Their record at Los Carmenes this season reads played 20, won 16, drawn 4, lost 0. 72% of their points have come in front of their own fans and as long as the loss tally remains blank come late on Saturday evening, Paco Lopez’s side will be playing top flight football in 2023/24.
The side out to thwart them are Leganes. The side from Madrid are nestled in mid-table with nothing to play for here. However with only 6 points separating 9th and 18th places, Leganes, who are currently 12th on 53 points, could see their position in the table change radically on Saturday depending on their result and events elsewhere.
Leganes do take good form into this game with 7 points from their last 3 matches. That includes an impressive 3-0 win at early season high-fliers Burgos in their last game. Overall though, there is little sign of them being capable of causing a major upset here. Their away games against sides currently in the top seven this season have yielded just one point and seen them score just twice.

Score Prediction: Granada 2-0 Leganes
This should be the crowning night for Granada and they’ve been so impressive all season at home that they really should take care of business here. There may be a few jitters early in the game but as soon as they settle down, they should get the better of Leganes, to seal a return to the Primera whilst winning the title.
