Villarreal vs Cadiz Preview

Villarreal match action

This match sees Spain’s two Yellow Submarines meet at the Ceramica. Both teams still have plenty to fight for with Villarreal looking to push for 4th place and Champions League qualification while Cadiz are perhaps one win away from securing another season in the top flight.

The home team will certainly be the clear favourites here. They’ve not done too much wrong in their pursuit of 4th, but the same can be said of Real Sociedad who maintain a 5 point advantage on Quique Setien’s side heading into this matchday. Villarreal briefly cut that to two 2 points at the weekend with a late winner at Girona, only for La Real to secure a surprise win at Camp Nou a few hours later.

Gerard Moreno was the scorer of that decisive goal with Villarreal’s main striker coming off the bench to prod in, but it was Nico Jackson who again stole the show with the youngster setting up both goals. Having nearly exited in January before a failed medical prevented him joining Bournemouth, Jackson’s reputation is growing with each passing week and he’s likely to be one of the main dangermen for the home team again here unless Setien decides he is due a rest.

As for Cadiz, they took a big leap towards safety with a 2-0 win over Real Valladolid in a big relegation six pointer on Friday night. Theo Bongonda was their hero with a brilliant long-range goal breaking the deadlock in the 69th minute but it was a strong team display with the visitors barely threatening in the game.

The result gives Sergio’s team a three point advantage on the bottom three heading into the midweek action. They will most likely need one more win to guarantee survival and they will get better chances to get it than this. They host a badly out of form Celta Vigo at the weekend before travelling to rock bottom Elche on the final day, so the Cadiz boss may consider rotating in some areas here, although his options are limited by injuries.

Score Prediction: Villarreal 4-1 Cadiz

It’s hard to look past a home win here. Villarreal are playing some good football and scoring plenty of goals with 12 in their last 3 home games alone. They should be too strong for a Cadiz side that may consider rotating in some areas with an eye on the weekend game with Celta which will give them much more chance of clinching safety.
