Sevilla vs Girona Preview
Sevilla’s remarkable turnaround under José Luis Mendilibar shows no sign of stopping and they’ll be hungry for another three points when Girona come calling on Monday. The two sides are level on 41 points and victory for either would potentially push them into European contention.
That’s a remarkable transformation in Sevilla’s case with the threat of relegation real when Mendilibar took over, a little over a month ago. They’ve taken 13 points from their 5 league games since the change and it would be 5 wins from 5 were it not for two very late goals conceded in the home game against Celta. Throw in a stunning Europa League win over Manchester United and the feelgood factor has certainly returned to the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan.
In truth, the football hasn’t always been sparkling and they carried almost no goal threat in a drab game in Bilbao last time out until a defensive mix-up granted them a penalty in the 92nd minute which Lucas Ocampos duly converted for a 1-0 win. Back-to-back home games against Girona and Espanyol this week now offer them a real chance to move into more serious European contention whilst also maintaining the momentum ahead of the trip to Juventus next week in the Europa League Semi-Finals.
Girona cannot be underestimated though as Real Madrid certainly found out last week. Despite dealing with what is quite an extensive injury crisis, Michel’s side produced a stunning performance to humble the European champions 4-2 at Montilivi. All the goals were scored by Taty Castellanos who had a night he will never forget, moving onto 11 for the season in LaLiga.
That moved Girona past the 40 point mark which is always the primary target for newly promoted sides in this league. The Catalans have never really been part of the relegation conversation but there are still areas of this team that could probably be upgraded in the summer. Most of the focus will be on the defence you’d imagine with only 4 sides having conceded more times in LaLiga 2022/23 heading into this matchday.
